As of 2021, Portugal had 1,181,027 immigrants out of 10,300,000 inhabitants, accounting for 11.5% of its total population. Dealing with foreigners, in 2019 there were some 590,000 people holding foreign citizenship in Portugal. With the COVID-19 pandemic, that number went up to 661,000 at the end of 2020. In 2007 Portugal had 10,617,575 inhabitants of whom 332,137, or 3.13%, were legal immigrants (51,7% female, 48,3% male). In 2020, Portugal had 662,095 legal residents of foreign origin, of which 336,123 identified as male, and 325,972 as female.

(en) O processo de imigração em Portugal teve vários momentos, desde a fixação de diferentes povos no processo de criação da nação portuguesa ao longo de milhares de anos, passando pelo mundo dos dias de hoje, com a imigração proveniente das suas ex-colónias, da Europa de Leste, ou, até mesmo, a imigração sénior de luxo proveniente de outros países da União Europeia, que devido à criação desse espaço comum e ao desejo dos europeus do Norte da Europa se fixarem nos países do Sul para passarem o resto das suas vidas, depois de uma vida de trabalho. Portugal, tal como a Espanha, passou de um país de emigração para um país de imigração, ou seja, a entrada de pessoas é superior à saída. As maiores comunidades imigrantes legais em Portugal (em 2005) foram os brasileiros, Romenos, cabo-verdianos e angolanos. Todas estas comunidades foram as maiores em diferentes anos, acabando por ser suplantadas por outras provenientes de ondas migratórias mais recentes.
