Un tanc lleuger es un tipus de tanc que inicialment es va dissenyar amb l'objectiu d'arribar a assolir grans velocitats, i avui en dia s'usen principalment en rols de reconeixement, o en suport de , on els tancs “usuals”, és a dir els MBT (de l'anglès “Main Battle Tanc”, en català: “Tanc de Batalla Principal”) no poden ser utilitzats. Els primers tancs lleugers tenien un blindatge i armament similar als Automòbils blindats, però amb la diferència que disposaven una velocitat camp a travessa més ràpida. El ràpid tanc lleuger va ser una de les armes més importants de la Segona Guerra Mundial, ja que gairebé tots els exèrcits en posseïen algun. En aquest conflicte el seu ús era el de penetrar en les línies enemigues i donar pas a vehicles mes pesants. Diversos dissenys de “tanquetes” van ser desenvolupats durant aquest període, com per exemple el M1 Combat Car americà o la L3/35 italiana. Lehký tank je rychlá a slabě pancéřovaná varianta tanku. V současnosti se primárně nasazuje v průzkumné roli nebo na podporu expedičních sil na bojištích, kam nelze dopravit hlavní bitevní tanky. První lehké tanky byly ozbrojeny a obrněny na podobné úrovni jako obrněné automobily, ale pro lepší mobilitu v terénu měly pásový podvozek. Rychlý lehký tank byl ve výzbroji armád nejvíce zastoupen před druhou světovou válkou, kde se od nich očekávalo, že budou využívat průlomy v nepřátelských liniích, vytvořené pomalejšími a těžšími tanky. V tomto období byly vyvinuty četné návrhy malých tanků, tančíků a podobných vozidel. Lehký tank je jednou z mála tankových variant, které zůstaly ve výzbroji armád i poté, co byl vyvinut hlavní bitevní tank. Los primeros tanques ligeros generalmente estaban armados y blindados de forma similar a un automóvil blindado, pero usaban orugas con el fin de proporcionar una mejor movilidad a través del campo. The fast light tank was a major feature of the pre-World War II army buildup, where it was expected they would be used to exploit breakthroughs in enemy lines created by slower, heavier tanks, with the goal of disrupting communications and supply lines. Numerous small tank designs and "tankettes" were developed during this period and known under a variety of names, including the "combat car".
