Maina Kiai ist kenianischer Rechtsanwalt und Menschenrechtsaktivist. Ab dem 1. Mai 2011 war er Sonderberichterstatter zu Versammlungs- und Organisationsfreiheit der Vereinten Nationen. Seine zweite und letzte Amtszeit endete am 30. April 2017. Kiai setzte sich in Kenia für die Menschenrechte ein, wobei er sich auf die Bekämpfung der Korruption und die Unterstützung politischer Reformen konzentrierte. Er kämpfte ebenfalls gegen Straflosigkeit nach den Unruhen in Kenia 2007/2008, die Kenia im Jahr 2008 in eine Krise stürzten. Zurzeit ist er als Mitdirektor der kenianischen Nichtregierungsorganisation , eine Menschenrechtsorganisation. (de)

Since 2018, he has headed Human Rights Watch's Alliances and Partnerships program. Kiai is also active in human rights work in Kenya, where he has focused on combating corruption, supporting political reform, and fighting against impunity following post-election violence that engulfed Kenya in 2008. Maina Kiai é um advogado e ativista de direitos humanos queniano. Depois de vários anos defendendo os direitos humanos no Quênia, onde fundou a Comissão Extra-Oficial de Direitos Humanos e chefiou a Comissão Nacional de Direitos Humanos, passou a atuar em organizações internacionais. Trabalhou na Anistia Internacional e no Conselho Internacional de Política de Direitos Humanos. Em 2011 foi nomeado Relator Especial das Nações Unidas sobre os direitos à liberdade de reunião pacífica e de associação, permanecendo no posto até 2017. Na sua atuação como relator da ONU, criticou a autorização para o uso de balas de borracha, gás lacrimogêneo e bombas de efeito moral durante as manifestações de rua em São Paulo em 2016 e a repressão a protestos em geral na América Latina.
