Dans l'univers imaginaire de Faucongris (utilisé pour le jeu de rôle Donjons et Dragons), Mordenkaïnen est un magicien célèbre. Ce personnage-joueur fut créé par Gary Gygax quelques mois à peine après le démarrage de la campagne de Gygax à Faucongris et est par voie de conséquence l'un des plus vieux personnages sans cesse associé à Donjons et Dragons. Lorsque Gygax fut contraint de quitter TSR, il perdit le contrôle créatif de Mordenkaïnen. TSR fit alors de Mordenkaïnen un puissant mage doté de solides convictions opposées aux absolus moraux, en même temps que le chef du Cercle des Huit, une cabale de huit puissants magiciens. Dans les œuvres de fictions associées au Monde de Faucongris, il a joué à la fois le rôle de protagoniste et d'antagoniste. He was created by Gary Gygax as a player character, only months after the start of Gygax's Greyhawk campaign, and is therefore one of the oldest characters continuously associated with Dungeons & Dragons. Once Gygax was forced out of TSR, Inc., he lost creative control of Mordenkainen. TSR then made Mordenkainen a powerful wizard with strong convictions against moral absolutes, and the leader of the Circle of Eight, a cabal of eight powerful wizards. In fiction associated with the World of Greyhawk, he has played diverse roles as both protagonist and antagonist.
