Púca (original) (raw)
The púca (Irish for spirit/ghost; plural púcaí), puca (Old English for goblin; plural pucel) pwca, pooka, phouka, puck is a creature of Celtic and Germanic folklore. Considered to be bringers both of good and bad fortune, they could help or hinder rural and marine communities. Púcaí can have dark or white fur or hair. The creatures were said to be shape-changers, which could take the appearance of horses, goats, cats, dogs, and hares. They may also take a human form, which includes various animal features, such as ears or a tail.

(de) Púca a thugtar ar arracht sí i miotaseolaíocht na nGael a fhuadaíonn daoine, ach d'fhéadfaidís a bheith ina gcreach nó ina gcabhair le daoine. Riocht capaill nó gabhair a bhíonn ar an bpúca de ghnáth cé go mbíonn riochtanna eile air amanna, m.sh. riocht iolair. Tugtar pwca air i mBreatnais agus tá bucca ann i miotaseolaíocht Chorn na Breataine, focal a thagann ón nGaeilge. Tá sé de nós ag an bpúca duine a chaitheamh suas ar a dhroim go n-iompraíonn sé an duine ar thuras scioptha ar fud na dúiche. Is minic a ghortaítear an marcach neamhthoilteanach, cé go dtagann sé/sí slán ach scanraithe go smior amanta eile. Daoine ar meisce is mó a thagann ar an bpúca i rith oícheanta dorcha gan ghealach. Ar ndóigh, tá baint ag an bpúca, a thaibhríonn san oíche, leis an "nightmare" ("láir oíche") as traidisiún Gearmánach an Bhéarla. Tá dlúthbhaint ag an bpúca, freisin, leis an each uisce, atá fiú níos contúirtí go mbánn daoine. Déantar iad a cheangal le neacha neamhsaolta eile, uaireanta: "Mná ab eadh na , agus fir ab eadh na púcaí."
