Μέσω του όρου Patrimonium Sancti Petri ορίζονται δύο πράγματα : * το σύστημα των εντός του Εξαρχάτου της Ραβένα το οποίο ήλεγχαν οι της Ρώμης, με τα εδάφη που είχε παραχωρηθεί στον από τον Λιουτπράνδο, να αποτελούν έτσι τον πρώτο πυρήνα των Παπικών Κρατών, * μια διοικητική διαίρεση που υιοθετήθηκε από τον Πάπα Ιννοκέντιο Γ΄ στα βόρεια της Ρώμης.
