Richard Sheldon Palais (né le 22 mai 1931 à Lynn, Massachusetts ) est un mathématicien américain qui travaille en géométrie différentielle et analyse globale.

Seit 1960 war er an der Brandeis University zunächst als Assistant Professor, ab 1962 als Associate Professor und ab 1965 als Professor. 1966 bis 1968 war er Vorsitzender des Mathematik-Departments. Er blieb in Brandeis bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2003. Von 1976 bis 1978 war er Gastprofessor an der University of California, Santa Cruz und 1981/82 Gastprofessor am Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn. 1984/85 war er Mitglied des MSRI in Berkeley und 1987 Gastprofessor des Nankai Institute of Mathematics in Tianjin. Ab 2004 Adjunct Professor an der University of California, Irvine, wo er Software zur Visualisierung von Mathematik entwickelt. Neben Differentialgeometrie, der Theorie kompakter, differenzierbarer Transformationsgruppen, Geometrie von Untermannigfaltigkeiten, Morse-Theorie, nichtlinearer globaler Analysis beschäftigte er sich auch mit der Theorie der Solitonen und Visualisierung der Mathematik.
