Al segle XXI, han assolit un ús generalitzat ja que, la tecnologia va permetre reduir la seva mida i la seva potència de processament va arribar a diversos milers de MIPS (dispositius amb processadors d'1 GHz i fins a 8000MIPS disponibles a partir de finals del 2006). Disposant d'un processador dedicat a cada unitat, les càmeres intel·ligents són especialment adequades per a aplicacions en què diverses càmeres han de funcionar de manera independent i, sovint, de manera asíncrona o quan es requereix una visió distribuïda (múltiples punts d'inspecció o vigilància al llarg d'una línia de producció o dins d'una màquina de muntatge). Smart-Kameras unterscheiden sich gegenüber Vision-Sensoren dadurch, dass die auf dem integrierten Prozessor durchgeführte Bildverarbeitung parametriert oder programmiert werden kann und gegenüber PC-basierten oder eingebetteten Systemen dadurch, dass die Bilder nicht übertragen, sondern direkt verarbeitet werden. Der Begriff „smart camera“ bzw. „intelligent camera“ wurde zum ersten Mal von Ron Schneidermann 1975 in einer Publikation bei „Electronics“ veröffentlicht. Im Jahr 1985 haben Buechli et al. eine preiswerte Smart-Kamera für „Machine Vision“ realisiert. Eine Smart-Kamera enthält Schnittstellen zur Kommunikation, zum Beispiel Ethernet, aber auch industrietaugliche V.24-Schnittstellen zum Anschluss an SPS oder Pneumatikventile. Questa architettura consente di realizzare applicazioni più compatte rispetto a soluzioni tradizionali che utilizzano elaboratori esterni (spesso dispositivi dedicati o PC) per elaborare le immagini riprese dalla telecamera. L'impiego di microprocessori dedicati con sistemi operativi relativamente semplici ha spesso il vantaggio di una maggiore affidabilità in ambienti industriali e consente l'avviamento del sistema in frazioni di secondo.La presenza di un processore dedicato in ogni telecamera semplifica applicazioni in cui numerose unità debbano operare indipendentemente e contemporaneamente.
