الحراجة الحضرية، تعني العناية والاهتمام بالأشجار في المناطق الحضرية لتحسين البيئة الحضرية. تدعم الحراجة الحضريّة دور الأشجار المهمّ في البنية التحتيّة الحضريّة. يزرع عمّال الحراجة الحضريّة الأشجار والنباتات، ويحافظون على الأشجار والغابات، ويُجرون أبحاثاً تثبت الفوائد التي تؤديها الأشجار. يختصّ بالحراجة الحضريّة عاملو رعاية الأشجار، التابعون منهم للبلدية والقطاع الخاص، خبراء الحراجة الحكوميون ومن القطاع الخاص، صانعو القرار البيئيّ، مخطّطو المُدن، المستشارون، الباحثون، وناشطو المجتمع المدني. Urbane Forstwirtschaft) beschäftigt sich mit dem Schutz und der nachhaltigen Entwicklung von Gehölzen und Grünräumen im Siedlungsbereich. Dieses vergleichsweise junge wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgebiet kommt aus dem angelsächsisch-amerikanischen Kulturraum, insbesondere aus dem Bereich der Hochschulausbildung und der wissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung. L'arboriculture urbaine ne concerne plutôt que celui qui est dans le deuxième cas, c'est-à-dire volontairement planté puis entretenu. À la différence du patrimoine floral qui est renouvelé selon un cycle court, les municipalités héritent souvent, comme pour le patrimoine architectural, d'un patrimoine ancien d'arbres (hormis pour les villes nouvelles), donc à gérer sur le long terme. (Dans de bonnes conditions, un chêne peut par exemple vivre plus de 500 à 700 ans, et un séquoia bien plus encore). Quand il s'agit d'arbres spontanés, ils sont souvent d'essences pionnières (saules, bouleaux, etc.) qui se développent naturellement sur des sols difficiles, voire sur les murs ou toitures en Europe par exemple. Elles sont alors souvent accompagnées de buissons d'espèces introduites et invasives comme le buddleia, ou cerisier tardif ou renouée du Japon dans les zones plus humides). Ces espèces s'installent volontiers sur les délaissés, dans les friches, voire sur des murs ou toitures. Les arbres volontairement plantés, de nombreuses autres essences souvent exotiques, choisis en raison de leur rusticité et de leur caractère décoratif, sont également présentes dans les villes. Ils sont plus ou moins utiles à la biodiversité selon les cas, mais rendent de nombreux services, par exemple en améliorant la qualité de l'air urbain. Termos técnicos como: área verde, florestas urbanas, parques urbanos, sistemas de lazer, praças, parques urbanos e similares também são considerados por alguns autores como sinônimos de arborização urbana.
