Ein christliches Trauerspiel y en inglés The Deputy, a Christian tragedy o The Representative, es un drama de ficción de 1963 de Rolf Hochhuth que imputa al Papa Pío XII no haber adoptado medidas ni haber expresado una clara posición contra el Holocausto. Ha sido traducida a más de veinte idiomas y una versión en inglés del texto completo realizada por Richard y Clara Winston fue publicada como The Deputy: A Play, por Grove Press en 1964, con una carta del Dr. Albert Schweitzer al editor alemán de Hochhuth como prólogo. La versión del texto en español, publicada por Grijalbo con traducción de Agustín Gil en 1964, tuvo ocho reimpresiones hasta 1977.

Als sein Appell vergeblich bleibt, wählt Fontana das Martyrium und schließt sich den Deportierten an. Hochhuths „christliches Trauerspiel“ wurde am 20. Februar 1963 in West-Berlin am Theater am Kurfürstendamm – dem damaligen Haus der Freien Volksbühne – uraufgeführt. Regie führte der Intendant der Freien Volksbühne, Erwin Piscator. Die Premiere rief weitreichende Kontroversen hervor („Stellvertreter-Debatte“) und führte zu internationalen diplomatischen Verwicklungen. Das Stück wurde bis heute in über 25 Ländern aufgeführt und 2002 von dem griechisch-französischen Regisseur Constantin Costa-Gavras verfilmt. The Encyclopædia Britannica assesses the play as "a drama that presented a critical, unhistorical picture of Pius XII" and Hochhuth's depiction of the pope having been indifferent to the Nazi genocide as "lacking credible substantiation." The first English translation by Robert David MacDonald was published as The Representative, by Methuen in Britain in 1963. In America a second translation by Richard Winston and Clara Winston was published as The Deputy by Grove in New York, 1964.
