UDP-Glucose-Pyrophosphorylase (UGPase) (oder UTP-Glucose-1-phosphat-Uridylyltransferase, Gen: UGP2) ist der Name des Enzyms, das die Umwandlung von UTP und Glucose-1-phosphat zu UDP-Glucose katalysiert. Diese Reaktion ist Teilschritt mehrerer Stoffwechselwege in den meisten Lebewesen. Das früher vermutete zweite Homolog im Menschen mit dem Gen UGP1 existiert wahrscheinlich nicht. (de)
La UDP-glucosa pirofosforilasa (EC 2.7.7.9) es una enzima que participa en la glucogenogénesis. Cataliza la reacción entre la Glucosa-1-fosfato y el UTP para formar UDP-glucosa. Posteriormente la UDP-glucosa será utilizada por el glucógeno sintasa para añadir una molécula de glucosa a un polímero de glucógeno en formación. Se presenta como homoctámero. Su localización celular es el citoplasma. Se pensó inicialmente que el genoma humano contenía 2 genes que codificaban la UDP-glucosa pirofosforilasa: UGP1 y UGP2. Se cree actualmente que la secuencia definida como UGP1 probablemente no exista y corresponda a la UGP2. (es)

It synthesizes UDP-glucose from glucose-1-phosphate and UTP; i.e., glucose-1-phosphate + UTP UDP-glucose + pyrophosphate UTP—glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase is an enzyme found in all three domains (bacteria, eukarya, and archaea) as it is a key player in glycogenesis and cell wall synthesis. Its role in sugar metabolism has been studied extensively in plants in order to understand plant growth and increase agricultural production. Recently, human UTP—glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase has been studied and crystallized, revealing a different type of regulation than other organisms previously studied. Its significance is derived from the many uses of UDP-glucose including galactose metabolism, glycogen synthesis, glycoprotein synthesis, and glycolipid synthesis. (en)
