Upagupta (vers le IIIe siècle av. J.-C.) est un moine bouddhiste. Selon certaines histoires issues du texte sanscrit Ashokavadana, il aurait été le guide spirituel de l'empereur maurya Ashoka. Upagupta est l'élève de Shanavasa, qui lui-même était un disciple d'Ānanda, proche de Bouddha. En raison de l'absence de son nom dans la littérature Théravada, on suppose qu'Upagupta était un moine Sarvāstivādin. In the Lokapannatti Upagupta is sent by Ashoka to tame Mara during an enshrinement ceremony festival, afterwards he asks her to take the physical form (rupakaya) of Buddha so that everyone at the festival can see what Buddha looked like. Uważany jest za czwartego patriarchę medytacyjnej (skt. dhjana, chiń. chan) linii przekazu nauki w buddyzmie. Znany jako nauczyciel króla Asioki pod koniec panowania króla, na jego życzenie, zwołał w trzeci sobór buddyjski z udziałem tysiąca mnichów. Sobór postawił sobie za cel oczyszczenie religii i przywrócenie pokoju w zgromadzeniu, gdyż wiele osób niegodnych wstępowało do sanghi dla wygodnego życia, co powodowało częste zamieszanie.
