19/01 "Eurovision Dance Contest has been put on hold. At least for the next couple of years. As you know, few years ago it was real boom of the dance shows on TV. It everything has started from the very first show that has appeared on BBC and then other countries and companies have joined this, and EBU has considered it's worthy to organize something like this. But this boom has been calming down and we have taken the decision to postpone this project. And I can say that we do not plan to revive it in the nearest future. 28/12 First, after a long break, information about the plans of organization of Eurovision Dance Contest in Azerbaijan has been published by APA news agency, which quotes Youth and Sports Minister of the country Azad Rahimov. "In 2009 Eurovision Dance Contest was due to be held in Azerbaijan, but because of the small number of countries interested in participation in the event European Broadcasting Board postponed the organization of the contest till 2010. However, we see that the number of interested countries is still insufficient. We would like to see participants from all across Europe to visit Azerbaijan and get to know our country. However, at present we see that countries wishing to participate in this contest, basically, represent the Balkans and the CIS. And it does not coincide with our plans and desires. The level of these countries does not satisfy us. We want countries such as Germany, Spain, France, United Kingdom to participate in the contest. If these countries will not take part, there is no sense in spending such a large sum of money for the organization of the competition. On the other hand, some of the countries expressed the wish to take part in the contest if all participation costs are covered by the Azerbaijani side. But this is simply impossible." 31/05 Silver medalist of Olympic Games in gymnastics, artist of Belstatecircus Yulia Raskina and professional dancer Denis Moryasin have emerged as winners of "Stars Dancing" project, the program that was originally planned as Belarus preselection for Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. Denis Moryasin with his partner Anna Skalaban are one of the most successful young couples of Belarus. Denis is learning ballroom dances from the age of 7, trains with P. Yartsev and M. Baslyk in Minsk club "Tango." The couple is vice-champions of Belarus in the youth latin 2009, and bronze medalists in youth standard 2009, currently occupying 3rd place in the current Youth and 8th place in the Adult ratings of Belarus. Yulia Raskina (born April 9th, 1982 in Minsk). From age of 7 is studying rhythmic gymnastics, in 2001 graduated from the Republican School of Olympic reserve. Honors: 1997: WC silver (team), 1998: EC gold (team), bronze (clubs), 1999: WC silver (team), silver (all-around), silver (ball), bronze (ribbon), 2000: EC Silver (team), silver (all-around), gold (ball), silver (ribbon), OI Silver (all-around). After completion of competitive career performs in a circus, toured with famous circus Du Soleil, currently has the solo program in Belstatecircus. 28/05 ESCKaz - Delivering news first "3rd Eurovision Dance Contest postponed to 2010", informed ESCKaz Mr.Sietse Bakker, Manager of Communications and PR of the Eurovision Family of Events. We reproduce EBU statement in this regards in full. The European Broadcasting Union is postponing the 3rd running of the Eurovision Dance Contest, which is to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in the autumn of 2010. Despite impressive preparatory work by Host Broadcaster Ictimai Television and its partners in Azerbaijan, the number of broadcasters that signed up for participation did not reach the desired level. The EBU and its partners aim at organising a new format to make an editorially more attractive and financially more sustainable production next year, featuring a larger number of participants. The postponement also gives EBU Members the opportunity to conduct longer and improved selection processes. Despite the decision to postpone the event, the EBU is optimistic about the future of the Eurovision Family of Events' most recently added member. "Following the commendable work on the next Eurovision Dance Contest already completed by our partners Ictimai Television and the Azerbaijani officials, we have jointly concluded that it is in the best interest of the event to postpone to next year, and therefore, concrete plans for a 2010 autumn event are now being developed, with considerable changes to introduce a new programme proposal," said Tal Barnea, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Dance Contest on behalf of the EBU. These plans are expected to be unveiled in the autumn of this year. Earlier this month, Eurovision TV Director Bjorn Erichsen spoke openly about the financial situation around the production: "It is true that most European broadcasters have significantly reduced their budgets, including basic expenses, and together with our Azerbaijani partners, we have responded accordingly by considerably reducing the participation fees, in comparison to 2008," Erichsen said, adding that "the organizers in Azerbaijan fully understand the complexity of the situation and have prepared an excellent proposal for this time of crisis. The Azerbaijani partners are ready to go the extra mile to ensure that the contest will be held at the highest level, with as many participating broadcasters as possible."We remind you that Russia has already announced participating couple in the contest to be currently 5th ranked couple in world amateur ballroom dance Sergey and Olga Konovaltsevy, and Belarus was supposed to announce representatives of the contest this Sunday after conducting lengthy televised preselection process. 27/05 Poland was one of the few countries to initially confirm participation in Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. ESCKaz has approached Mr. Daniel Jablonski, spokesperson of TVP to share the latest news in regards of selection of the couple for the contest and got an answer: "We're very surprised about your inquiry as according to our information this competition will not take place this year". 23/05 Organizers are in talks with international stars Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue and Shakira to host Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 in Baku, as informed Minister of Youth and Sport of the country Azad Rahimov. He assured that talks are going successfully and organizers will be able to reach agreement with them. Rahimov however, failed to inform on the list of participating countries in the contest. "According to the rules, the countries intended to participate at the contest must send a letter to the European Broadcasting Union to confirm their participation. The process is still going on. Project of the First Channel of Belarus - show "Star Dances", a national qualifying round of the Eurovision Dance Contest 2009, is coming to it's conclusion. A couple of winners, which will represent country at the international event in Baku will be announced on May 31st. For the right to participate in the EDC 2009 will be competing parties, that have managed to qualify to the final of the dance marathon. Jury will vote for the final performances. Televoters will be able to cast their votes via SMS after the conclusion of the penultimate broadcast of the show on Sunday 24th of May. The vote will run until 14.00 on Monday 25th May. During the gala concert in the final broadcast of the project "Star Dances", which will be aired on May 31st, all 8 couples who participated in the project, will perform their most beautiful dances. A couple which obtained the greatest number of SMS-votes and points of judges will be named representatives of Belarus at the Eurovision Dance Contest 2009.Currently, only 4 couples are left in Belarus national preselection for the contest: Kirill Klishevich - Svetlana Pashkevich, Ruslan Chernetskiy - Ekaterina Popova, Iskui Abalyan - Artyom Gorbachyov, Yulia Raskina - Denis Moryasin. According to the announcement of Eurovision.TV's Bjorn Erichsen, the contest will proceed in Baku and organizers have managed to get number of new countries in the project replacing the ones that have withdrawn. Some more details have been revealed at the special interview with Eurovision.tv.However, our consultations with participating delegations have not managed to produce any single confirmation of participation. We have talked to several countries that have expressed their interest in joining, but as some find the participation fee to be very high, the final confirmation has not yet been given. As the deadline for confirmation of participation has passed last week, at least 5 countries from last year: Austria, The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Lithuania have confirmed to ESCKaz their withdrawal from competition this year. At the present moment, we do not know about any single new country besides Belarus that confirmed it's participation in the show. We have not received any confirmations from Greece (but we believe that they same as Lithuania are considering withdrawal from both EDC and JESC), Denmark, Ireland, UK and Ukraine. On the EBU press-conference it has been admitted though that Eurovision Young Dancers, which was due to return in 2009 after skipping 2007 is cancelled again due to the low number of countries subscribed. Bjorn Erichsen stated that may be in future this competition will return, but it seems to be fairly unlikely at the moment. Also, ESCKaz has learnt that according to the regulations of 2009 edition of the contest, we're going back to the first scheme, where there is no obligations considering the professionality of participating couples - thus both professional couples and mixed amateur+professionals will be allowed to join. 23/04 The first episodes of a new project of Belarus "First Channel"- show "Star Dance", a national qualifying round of the Eurovision Dance Contest, caused a huge spectators interest. In this regard, the organizers have decided to give viewers an opportunity to compare their preferences with the opinion of the professional jury and select with the help of internet voting the couple they like from the list of participants. By filling out a special form on the official site of Belteleradiocompany, viewers will be able to vote for a favorite couple and see the overall results of the vote. The results of online voting will not affect the decision of jury. 16/04 ESCKaz - Delivering news first Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 is on the verge of cancellation. "Please understand it correctly, we'd really like it to take place. But, unfortunately, we can not do it without the participants", admitted Eurovision TV Bjorn Ericksen in his statement to Azeri press. Final decision on the show will be taken by the end of the month. Relocation of contest from Baku is not planned. ESCKaz got the confirmation of participation from Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Portugal, while Austria, Finland and The Netherlands have confirmed to us withdrawal from competition. On April 12th at 18.55 local time in the First Channel of Belarus a new project "Star Dances", the national selection round of Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 will be launched. Eight couples consisting of one professional and one non-professional dancer have been formed: 1. Singer Iskui Abalian and Artem Gorbachev; 2. Singer Venera (Natalia Kudrina) and Pavel Grebenkin; 3. Host of TV show �Good morning, Belarus!�, executive producer of TV channel �LAD� Karas Dimitri and Irina Kazantseva; 4. Member of the band �Tyani-tolkay� Klishevich Kirill and Svetlana Pashkevich; 5. Silver medalist of Olympic Games in gymnastics, actress of Circus Julia Raskina and Denis Moryasin; 6. Host of the �Panorama� program Victoria Senkevich and Sergey Kiselev; 7. Singer Alexey Khlestov and Elena Leshkevich; 8. Actor Ruslan Chernetsky and Ekaterina Popova. Since April 12, every Sunday at the First channel couples will represent to the jury their dance routines. Two couples who obtained the lowest score, will become candidates for exlclusion from the project. Voting will begin at the end of the show and will continue until 14.00 on Monday. As a result, SMS voting viewers will be able to save one of two nominated couples, while the other will be relegated. In the final decision will be taken by 100% televoting. The jury will include the Deputy Chairman of Belteleradiocompany Alexander Martynenko, Chairman of the Federation of sporting ballroom dances, Distinguished Artist of Belarus Tatiana Bondarchuk, Supreme International Dance Sport category arbiter Irina Parahnevich. 06/04 Are the first participants of Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 already known? Back in May 2008 (that is one and half years before the contest) during the final of 3rd edition of Russian "Dancing with stars" show on "Russia" channel, viewers have been introduced a couple, that will represent Russia at the Eurovision Dance Contest 2009, Sergey and Olga Konovaltsevy, many times prize winners of international competitions, that have performed as special guests during the final of the project. This March, channel "Russia" has launched a new edition of the show, and already for several weeks, couple of Konovaltsevy is being invited as guests and is every time promoted as Russian representatives at Eurovision Dance Contest. You can watch performances of the couple from all episodes of the show here. It remains very much unclear though, how couple of Konovaltsevy can take part in Eurovision, as last year a new rule, prescribing all couples to be made of professional and non-professional dancers has been introduced. Channel "Russia" has not clarified this issue yet. 04/04 European Broadcasting Union has finally officially confirmed the date - third Eurovision Dance Contest is to be held in the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex (SCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday 26 September 2009. Seating capacity of the arena is over 8,500 spectators. Up to 20 qualified mixed couples will perform in the 2009 Eurovision Dance Contest with a freestyle choreography inspired by the country or tradition they represent. In addition to being judged by a jury of performance experts in the arena, the European audience at home cast their decisive vote by televoting and text voting to determine this year's winner of the Grand Prix Dancing title. 23/03 Polish broadcaster confirmed participation in Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. According to the information published by Polish site ESC24 there will be no public preselection organized and Polish representatives at the contest will be appointed by TVP2 internally, as it happened in the previous years. Website also reports that decision will be taken unusually early, by the end of April. 19/03 ESCKaz - Delivering news first On 18th of March, participants of "Star Dance" project have passed their first test to the professional jury. The examination took place in dance-class. Participants had to demonstrate several dances from Latin American and European programs, which for the last month they have studied with professional choreographers. Learning process has been daily followed by cameras of "Good morning, Belarus" program and News Agency of BTRC. Today, after calculating the scores, jury named eight celebrities who have qualified to the next round of the draft "Star Dance": 1. Iskui Abalian - singer; 2. Venere - singer; 3. Dmitriy Karas - host of "Good morning, Belarus" show; 4. Kirill Klishevich - member of the band "Tyani-Tolkay"; 5. Yulia Raskina - silver medalist of Olympic Games in gymnastics; 6. Victoria Senkevich - host of "Panorama" show on First Channel; 7. Alexey Khlestov - singer; 8. Ruslan Chernetsky - actor. For all of them have been allocated partners from the professional dancers accredited by Belarusian Dance Sport Federation. 18/03 Austria has withdrawn from Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 in Baku, as was confirmed today by ORF representative to German Eurovision blog eurofire.blog.de. Reasons for withdrawal have not been stated, but the low position in the previous edition of the contest may be one of the reasons. 12/03 ESCKaz - Delivering news first Candidates to take part in a new Belarusian TV show "Star Dances" will have to pass the exam on the choreography, after a four-week training. An exciting moment for 39 candidates will take place on Friday, March 13th, informed consultant of the project, teacher of the Belarusian State University of Physical Education, Master of Sports Alexei Zadkov. For a month, three times a week for two hours, Belarusian singers, actors, athletes, TV hosts and journalists were learning plastics and movement. Today the Supervisory Board will determine which dances will be included into exam, but it is known that it will be two Latin American and two European dances. In a couple with contenders will dance students of Belarusian State University of Physical Education, the future dance coaches. Only eight participants will be lucky: their names will be revealed by jury on Monday, March 16. Those gained the right to participate in the project will also obtain their permanent partner - same future dance coaches. Eight couples including professional and non-professional dancer will start futher trainings. In early April, First Channel will start broadcast the TV series Star Dances. During two months on a Saturday evening, Belarusian spectators and the jury will vote, support and save the nominated couples, until 3 couples are left in the running. Of the three winner that will represent Belarus in Eurovision Dance Contest will be selected. 25/02 ESCKaz - Delivering news first BTRC launched a new �Star Dances� project, a preselection round for Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. Participants of the first round - 36 well-known people in Belarus - have already begun rehearsals with choreographers. Video reports from the training sessions can be seen in the morning show of BTRC. On March 16th, the jury will announce the names of the eight celebrities who have qualified to the next round. Eight participants from the professionals will be determined by the Belarusian Dance Sport Federation. Thus, eight couples will be formed consisting of one professional and one non-professional dancer. Since April, each week on Saturdays couples will perform their dance numbers. Two couples who obtained the lowest score, will become candidates to leave in the project. As a result of SMS voting viewers will be able to save one of them, second couple will leave the project. In the final of the �Star Dances� show winner will be selected by televoting. A couple who obtained the highest number of votes will become the representative of Belarus at Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. Artistic Director of the project �Star Dances� is the Belarusian Dance Sport Federation Chairman, Director of the Belarusian State Circus, Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Belarus Tatiana Bondarchuk. Our ministry will lend all necessary support to Ictimai Television, which will be in charge of organizing this event, in cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union. The record of the companies includes the co-production of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, which took place in Kyiv, Ukraine, the organization of all European concert tours and promotion campaigns of Ruslana, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, as well as the organization of the debut of Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and the Eurovision Dance Contest 2008. Producer-general of the "Eurovision Dance Contest 2009" has been appointed Farhad Gadzhiev. With are the new offers of Azerbaijan for the competition? First, the record number of countries participating in the contest. This is one of the priorities set by the organizers of the EDC 2009. For comparison, the 2008 contest was aired in 24 countries (although only 14 actively took part in it), which got the show the audience of a few dozens of millions of viewers across Europe. This year the audience of the dance show is expected to raise for a few more millions of viewers. Second, it is known that the hosts of the show will be well-known world stars. It is yet secret, which of world famous persons Ictimai TV is in talks with. Third, the organizers had already planned to organize a new great show with an additional live broadcast on European channels. For this event past winners of Eurovision Dance Contest, the brightest stars and singing sensations of Eurovision of the recent years, as well as young celebrities of Junior Eurovision will be invited. It is also possible that this event will be also attented by another world star as a special guest. Guests of dance show will become participants of big official opening and closing ceremonies with special invited guests, which never took place in Eurovision Dance Contest before. To realize this ambitious project organizers will use the latest technological solutions in production of video shows. In terms of production Dance Eurovision will not concede his elder brother - Song Eurovision. There are highlights from his show and the organizers of the contest for the fans of Eurovision and ballroom dancing and sports, which will create the most loyal conditions for the visit to Azerbaijan. So, instead of the traditional rise in prices, in Baku it is planned to introduce a system of discounts at hotels. 02/02 EBU has officially confirmed that Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 will take place in September this year at the Heydar Aliev Sports and Concert Complex (SCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan. 23/12 Azerbaijan has won right to host Eurovision Dance Contest over UK and Poland, reported today Azerbaijan State News Agency quoting Minister of Sport and Youth Azad Rahimov. According to him contest will take place in Baku on September 16, 2009. Still, there is no any statement from EBU on the future of contest. 04/12 According to Polish newsportal Mediarun.pl, Polish broadcaster TVP2 has been confirmed on 2nd of December as host of Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. According to the same article: Agata Kulesza and Stefano Terrazzino will represent Poland in this edition of the contest. ESCKaz has approached Polish delegation to confirm the news. According to the internal information reaching ESCKaz during consultations with Heads of Delegations and EBU at Limassol, during JESC 2008, EBU plans to allow new countries in the contest for 2009 edition. Belarus delegation, for example, confirmed that they have been officially included in the participating list and plan to announce big televised national selection in "Dancing with Stars" vein for this show. However, according to different sources, EBU is far from being pleased with outcome of EDC in terms of viewing figures and finances. There are already strongly sounding proposals either to run this contest every two years, with Eurovision Young Dancers taking place on 2nd year, or to cancel it completely. So far there is no official confirmation on where and when Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 will take place. The latest reports suggest that Polish broadcaster is still undecided on whether they will be able to host next edition of the contest. Polish site onet.pl reported on 20th of October, quoting deputy director of TVP 2 broadcaster for entertainment Mr.Jaroslaw Burdek saying that "We're very seriously considering it (hosting the contest in Poland". According to the article TVP is currently negotiating with EBU on financial conditions. A decision will be taken by the end of the year. At the same time there continues discussions with the cities that may host the contest: Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw. Biennial Eurovision Young Dancers contest is confirmed to be back for 2009 after skipping year 2007. The 12th edition of the contest will take place on Friday, 19 June 2009 in Norwegian Oslo�s newly refurbished Dance House, a venue specially designed for modern dance shows.The event is aimed at young dancers aged between 15 and 21, competing in modern dances, be it sole or in couples, as long as they are not professionally engaged. Professional international jury headed by the prominent British choreographer, dancer and director Wayne McGregor, will have its say and will try to persuade the audience into selecting the winners. 09/09 ESCKaz - Delivering news first National Broadcaster of Belarus plans to debut in Eurovision Dance Contest 2009, informed deputy chairman of BTRC Alexandr Martynenko. To select participating couple, Belarus will run televized preselection project. According to Martynenko, the Belarus dancing school is on the very high level, and there surely will be interested celebrities, which will be able to represent country on the highest level in the international dancing competition. BTRC has been broadcasting two previous contests. As deputy chairman of BTRC noted, televiewers have shown big interest to the broadcast of this project. Broadcast of EDC, as well as of ESC and Junior Eurovision, collects the top viewing rates in the country. Earlier, broadcasters from Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cyprus also announced their intention to join the competition. However, participation of the new countries will depend on whether EBU will take decision on expansion of the project and whether the broadcasters of these countries will be capable to pay rather high participation fee. Eurovision Dance Contest 2008, or as organizers define it "the second annual showcase of the continent's most complex choreography and riveting routines", will be hosted by BBC Scotland in Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center (SECC), Glasgow on 6th of September and presented again by Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman. The show will be broadcast live via the Eurovision Network at 21:00 CET, from the 5,000m2 SECC Arena 3rd Hall, where up to 2,000 spectators will be able to witness this event live. Length of the show is unchanged - 135 minutes. Eurovision Dance Contest again will be a co-production between Splash Media and Sunset + Vine with assistance from the International DanceSport Federation and in association with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). 14 countries will participate (in brackets - broadcasting channel): Austria (ORF2), Azerbaijan (Ictimai TV), Denmark (DR1),Finland (YLE2), Greece (ERT/NET and ERT Sat), Ireland (RTE1), Lithuania (LRT/LTV), The Netherlands (TROS/Nederland1), Poland (TVP2), Portugal (RTP1 and RTPi),Russia (Channel One), Sweden (TV4), UK (BBC One) and Ukraine (NTU/First), with Azerbaijan being the only newcomer and Switzerland, Germany and Spain withdrawing from the show, still liable for paying participation fee (Spain withdrew after conducting national selection just 15 days before the contest). All participating broadcasters are obliged to broadcast show live on one of the main national terrestrial channels. EDC is not open for all EBU members, but is run on invitations only basis, with selection based on two factors: 1) invitation of these countries should give to the contest high professional level, 2) participating countries should be able to finance the contest. Hosting country 2009 has not been selected yet, the participating broadcasters have been invited by the EBU to participate in a tender to host the show and mount the public event. All other EBU members were invited to broadcast competition. Confirmed to broadcast event without sending representatives are: Albania (RTSh), Belarus (First Channel), Cyprus (RIK1 and RIK Sat), FYR Macedonia (MRT1 and MKTV Sat) (live), Iceland (RUV) (deferred at 19.45 local), Spain (TVE2) (at 22.00 local), Bosnia-Herzegovina (BHT1) (at 16.30 on Sunday), Israel (IBA1) (at 21.40 on Monday) and also in Armenia (ArmTV) and Malta (TVM). More Besides television contest will also be broadcasted in internet via octoshape technology in two feeds: 350 and 700 Kbps. Biggest change in the rules of the contest is the fact that professional couples are no longer eligible to enter the competition. Each participating broadcaster will present one qualified, mixed dancing couple (two dancers, one man and one woman) to represent its country in the EDC. According to the competition rules, one of the dancers must be a professional dancer, while the other will be a non-professionally engaged dancer, a local "celebrity" known in a field other than dance, thus, most of couples are coming from local Dancing With Stars shows. All dancers should be older than 18 years of age and at least one dancer in the couple must have a passport from or be a resident of the country they are representing. EBU explanation to the fact of admission of professional couples from Azerbaijan and Greece to the competition is available here. International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) is responsible to ensure that best dancers and most qualified experts will add to the contest more charm, excitement and prestige. National federations - members IDSF in cooperation with national broadcaster will be assisting in selection of participating couples (each professional member of the couple, participating in international final should be accredited by IDSF) and also in the selection of dance expert, who will act as a co-commentator for each country. According to the rules of Eurovision Dance Contest, automatic IDSF accreditation is received by those dancers, who are validly registered at IDSF on the day of the contest, or previously had taken part in the national or international dance competition recognized by IDSF. In case dancer, selected as professional, doesn't meet any of this two criterias, IDSF will ensure that national federation member will run validation procedure, to confirm that the dancer in question is possessing required abilities to represent the country at international event, and if the dancer receives such a confirmation, he/she also will be accredited by IDSF. Another big change this year is that couples will have to perform only one (length of which was originally limited at 1 min 45 sec but later prolonged to 2 minutes) - a Freestyle dance with a national flavour (in terms of music, style and costumes) which should also include elements of the traditional Latin or Ballroom - as opposite to two numbers last year. All couples will perform a group dance as well. In 2008 a panel of experts voting will be introduced with an approximate weight of 25% of the total outcome (or weight of 4 countries) (jurors will cast their votes right after each performance) and the rest 75% will be determined through televoting (which will open once all performances are completed). Jury members are: Gladys Tay (Singapore), Barbara Nagode Ambroz (Slovenia), Michelle Ribas (France) and Sven Traut (Germany). Bios Viewers will be asked to vote via telephone or SMS (in certain countries) on the overall performance: dancing, choreography, costume and choice of music. They will be assisted by local expert commentator who will describe performance and artistic content. The highest possible points from the jury vote will be of 48 points for 1st place (the Eurovision system multiplied by 4, 40 for 2nd, 32 for 3rd... 4 for 10th) while the televoting will cast a maximum of 156 points (Eurovision system 12-10-8..1 from 14 countries). 08/09 ESCKaz - Delivering news first Swedish TV4 commentator Tony Irving has filled in a protest to organizers of Eurovision Dance Contest and International Dance Sport Federation. According to the experienced dance expert and jury member of Swedish "Let's Dance" competition, and choreographer of Swedish performance, 9 of 14 participating couple have broken the rules of the contest. "It should be investigated", says Swede, "and at least rules for the next contest should be changed, become clear and be respected. It's TV4's responsibility to ensure that the EBU fixes it". According to the rules of contest, all couples should have been made of one professional and one non-professional. More than that all dances should have included elements of ballroom and latin dance and national flavour. - Greece has a worldwide famous dan�er, while he is presented as windsurfer. Azerbaijan dancers are also well known. Lithuanian couple are also almost professionals. Karina Krysko is presented as a singer, because she also sings. But she has been dancing since 12 years old. In fact, Danny is one of the only three that is not a trained dancer, says Toni Irving. - It was very strange that jury gave their highest marks to a jazz dance, which had no elements of ballroom dancing, says Swedish choreographer and another Let's Dance judge Dermot Clemenger. - If a pure free dance was allowed, it would have created of course a much wider range of opportunities, adds Dermot. - We've carefully studied the rules regarding dances, and only Ukraine, Portugal, Finland, Russia and Sweden have obeyed them, claimed Clemenger in a rather disputed statement. TV4's project manager Niklas Vestberg however replied: - It is clear that some have more advantage of having dance background, but I would not call it an irregularity. The countries have simply differently interpreted the rules. Swedish commentators have been supported by Russian colleagues: Choreographer Victor Nikovsky: We were shocked, that some countries seemingly had different rules compared to others. It is very difficult to understand judges who evaluated the technique of performance of Danish couple, putting them on the first place, where there was not a single step, nor from the standard, neither from the Latin American ballroo program, not a single moment where a national flavour was demonstrated. Commentator Stanislav Popov: Marcin Mrochek has been learning modern dance for 10 years. A couple from Lithuania, Karina took parti in competitions for ballroom dancing, Azerbaijan and Greece - are couples of highest level, winners of numerous tournaments. As per rules, we have to explain four moments to our readers: 1) Professional dancers in terms of EDC are those dancers who took part in IDSF tournaments in pair ballroom or latin competitions, or have been specially allowed to be considered professional by local dance sport federations. Thus, non-professionals is opposite, those dancers who never competed in tournaments under IDSF. It is not prohibited in any way that dancers should not have any dance experience. Taking lessons of dance, being modern dance professionals, or have Dancing With Stars show experience - anything is fine but professional ballroom dancing. Two couples of EDC, Greek and Azerbaijan have tournament experience, and a breach is clear here. There is no breach in Polish and Lithuanian couples. 2) All dances in competition should include elements of ballroom and latin, but are not required to be 100% ballroom and latin. So, elements of modern dances, jazz dances, hip hop used by some couples are fine. There are no couples breaking this rule on our opinion. Danish dance used elements of samba, tango and pasodoble. 3) All dances should include national flavour in dance style, music or costumes. However, rules do not set any limits on amount of this flavour - so, there is no breach in current rules when national flavour is represented only by small detail of costume, like the national symbol. Meanwhile, Danish dance concept was based on the well-known ghost story in the Danish castle, and it was perform on the song Danish group in Danish, Polish national colour was demostrated in colours of outfits of the dancers, same as colours of national flag. 4) There is no rule saying that performed dance should be original and not performed earlier by some one. Yes, there were several dances, including Russian and British, that were very close to the dances of other couples performed some years ago, but there is no breach in it. The rules are not perfect, but they should be followed as it is. When there is clear breach, it should be mentioned and taken in account. "The historic victory", are headlines of Polish newspapers celebrating first ever Polish victory in Eurovision event. - Victory in Eurovision dance for TVP is a huge success, said Maja Frybes, TVP2 editor to ESC24.org. The Eurovision Dance Contest 2008 was very well prepared, both in terms of production and editorial supervision, as well as the great on-air broadcast. The success of Edyta and Marcin is the result of their hard work. In addition, success is the very high audience figures for Eurovision Dance 2008. Today, broadcaster hosted the winners of the competition - Edyta Herbus, Marcin Mroczek and choreographer Roman Pawelec as guests of the show "Questions for breakfast" Tomorrow TVP2 will replay of the show (first part at 13.55, second part at 16.00), and on September 27th at 15.00 will air a documentary with the most interesting moments of Edyta and Marcin staying in Glasgow. EBU has already suggested Polish television to enter application to host Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 and TVP does not exclude this possibility. Polish press though also speculates that Russia has been preliminary chosen as host of EDC 2009, despite also hosting Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision Talent Contest on the same year. However, EBU has categorically denied this information, stating that hosting country will be decided only later this year and all interested broadcasters can submit their bids now. Interestingly, ESCKaz has learnt that cha-cha-cha elements on "Black or White" in Eurovision dance of Polish couple were almost identical to the showdance performed by Marcin Mroczek in the final of Ukrainian "Dancing With Stars 3. The Champions League", which you can watch here. The TV ratings for the show in Poland were even higher this year, compared to last year. Last year Poland has contributed the biggest amount of viewers to the dance contest as well. A record breaking 48% of market share, 4.3 millions people have followed the contest. First part of the show was watched by 3 million of viewers (26.63% of the share). Ratings of the show on second channel of TVP have been also significantly higher than ratings of Eurovision Song Contest on TVP1, which managed to collect only 3.25 mln of viewers (32% of share) earlier this year. 08/09 ESCKaz - Delivering news first "We had to overcome continious obstacles, as the horses we jumped over the barriers... and managed to overcome them! We were not let in. First, the embassy did not issue a visa, then was not allowing Alexander to go abroad. My mom still was unable to get a visa", says figure skater Tatiana Navka. "The judges are actually very subjective people... You can not be good for everyone! Another problems is that we were unable to crush the wall built in Western minds in connection with the latest developments in Georgia and Ossetia. We were expecting it, that even with good performance we will not be able to reach high places, only for being citizen of Russia. It was absolutely possible. Even dancers from other countries thought about it and said "Guys, you have a cool dance, but you won't get higher than 5th or 6th place". But something happened! Probably, our dance still was liked a lot, so we able to reach 2nd place!" Tatiana Navka adds that first of all their dance was meant for local audience: "We were confident that our people, our Russia will understand and will support and like us. Because this is our music, our soul, our heart!". Talk show "Let's speak" was devoted to Eurovision Dance Contest. It was attended by Russian couple, choreographer V. Nikovsky, head of the Russian delegation Yuri Aksyuta, commentator S. Popov, commentator of the last year A. Zavorotnyuk and others. I do not dance as a professional, this is my hobby, so I was pleased with marks of judges", tells Olympic Champion Lilia Podkopayeva from Ukraine. "We were leading in all betting offices. We were ready for prize spot and knew that either Ukraine or Poland or Russia will win. We became friends, we partied together. It is great that we had a mutual support" "We were in the lead at all rehearsals, says Lilia. "Probably at the end jury has decided to create a bit of intrigue and only pushed viewers to support our couples more actively. We're very happy with Polish victory. Edyta is very strong, bright dancer, she was very different among others. And Marcin was worried a lot before the final, he was very pale and to regain his senses had to dring a bit of cogniac before the performance". We were filled with emotions, but physically it was a torture for our legs and bodies and only departing from Glasgow we could sleep happily. Probably we will sleep for the whole week now", said Lithuanian singer-dancer Karina Krysko to L.T. "It is very important that we were high rated by the judges. They put us on third place. But then politics interfered and change things. It is possible that Lithuania is proud of us. Audience liked our performance a lot and we were pleased with that. There were many Lithuanian flags in the hall, and many Lithuanians supported us at the rehearsals", says Karina. "We thank all viewers, fans, who have supported us enormously. We are very satisfied with our 4th place, however if Lithuania got more points from Russia, we could have finished 3rd", noticed singer. "We did everything we could. The other things is not our business. Our work is to work every day. Our job is to perform well. Everything connected with the picture, was our duty. After official results of the contest Azerbaijan dancer Anna Sazhina apologized to her partner Eldar Dzhafarov for testing the straight of his feelings to her. She put her ring on and said that she will marry her dance partner. "Before I was thinking about the contest only as well as Eldar. When everything was finished and we knew results I�ve understood that it is not so important whether we win or not. Our love stronger that any results and contests! That�s why I�ve apologized to Eldar and said that I want to marry him", � said Anna Sazhina after show. Anna and Eldar haven�t thought about when and where their wedding will take place but it�s seems to be that the most important day of their life will be in Baku. "It is a great result for us! We are back to Azerbaijan totally impressed and happy with it. Despite enjoying her appearance on Eurovision Dance Contest and Strictly Come Dancing in 2006, Louisa ruled out doing more reality shows and said she wanted to concentrate on her acting and perhaps starring on stage in the West End. On BBC One, the second annual Eurovision Dance Contest was seen by an average of 4.73m (22%) between 8pm and 10.15pm. "Mikko and Maria appeared absolutely brilliantly, and I am certainly not the only one who felt a great pride watching their performance", says Finnish Eurovision expert Asko Murtomaki. "Eurovision Dance Contest was a wonderful show, and Britain has succeeded in it's organization", said Asko, who previously publicly accused Azerbaijan and Greek couples to be breaching the rules of the show, noting however, that this is not dancers fault and if they were allowed, then they can compete. "I thought the show was fantastic, had a fabulous time, especially meeting the rest of the dancers, it will be an experience I will never forget", told ESCKaz Irish dancer/actor Gavin O'Fearraigh. "Apart from all of that, certainly I was dissapointed seeing that Ireland seemed to stick by the rules though majority of other countries did not. They had performed a technically difficult and very well presented dance. I'm very dissapointed. 08/09 ESCKaz - Review Eurovision Dance Contest 2009 - both success and failure. "With this competition, we created a fantastic new Eurovision tradition, which we are confident will last for many years to come," says Bjorn Erichsen, Director of Eurovision TV. It is clear that organizers looked forward creating one-day special, rather than 2-3 month coverage event as it Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision. The organizers strictly prohibited national delegations direct contact with independent media prior to the Euroweek and spreading of the detailed information about their dances/music/costumes and other related things. However this task has failed as well. For example, in host country, UK despite TV ratings have significantly risen from 2008 to 2009 4.73m (22%) compared with 3.8m (18%), it is still lower than average rating of local "Strictly Come Dancing" on Saturday night. Almost same situation is in Finland and Sweden, for example. A point was risen, whether it is profitable to produce and broadcast one day special which receives lower ratings than average local show? Another mistake, was scheduling the contest on the night of football, which lead to withdrawal of one participating country. For example, in Portugal, where broadcast had one period clash with football, ratings from record breaking share of 43.7% last year have fallen to 25.1% share (8.7% ratings) this year. Same is situation in Austria. The prohibition of prior promotion lead to the fact that ESCKaz was the only source of information covering in details the preparation period. But lack of information about the contest on TV and printed media has lead to the fact, that there were less than 50 journalists accredited at the event in Glasgow and press-room had only 4 desctop computers for them. Most of the press was coming from Britain, couple of smaller ESC fan sites members arrived only in the late part of the week, but no one, except for ESCKaz has managed to engage a ballroom specialist to cover what is a DANCE competition not meant for ESC audience. It should be agreed that production quality of EDC 2008 has risen from past year, however some camera work should still be criticized, but that was not as bad in 2008. It seems, however, that viewers had major troubles understanding the system of jury and televoting mix, which is no strange, as detailed regulations of jury voting have been published only on ESCKaz, without any coverage on official site of competition or during the live broadcast. Despite claiming that "both non-experts and jury will recognise the winners the moment they see them" the voting has clearly shown major difference between jury and televoting. Another suggestion comes to mind, that jury votes probably should be revealed only after televoting, not to influence viewers. The were less signs of neighbour and diaspora voting during the show, but mainly due to the two facts: lower number of participating countries and lower number of televiewers. However, the distribution of 12-10 points still was clearly predictable to diaspora voting, followed by 5-6-7-8 points mainly distributed to the best dances, while lower 1-2-3-4 points mostly was random due to the very low number of votes received in some countries. Another major issue was rule-breaking by several participating countries. Though organizers have kept quite on this subject, the matter was risen live on air by most of commentators of the contest, who have warned public on irregularities and even at cases asked them not to vote for the countries represented by professional couples. The interval act was mixed failure-success as well. Though originally having a nice idea to present televoting numbers while dancers are performing group dance, most delegations were very strict on it - it adds extra pressure on non-professional dances, who, besides own dance routines, should spend hours on practicing what is almost unnecessary and very difficult extra routine. Second part of interval act, performance of Lesley Garrett and Carousel musical was not very successful as well, but not due to music quality, which was on top level. From 7 channels we had access to, only Macedonian television has broadcasted interval act in full (a non-participant country), while other broadcasters have cut it due to advertising. Winning couple has produced very energetic dance on the floor and clearly were tipped as one of the favourites by Euroweek reporters. But whether it had any national flavour in it, besides white-red colours of the costumes? Poland was one of few countries that have been dancing on not a national sountrack, and victory of performance on Michael Jackson's song is clearly a failure of organizers to involve national favour in all dances and produce a clear rules for this matter. With number of diaspora votes coming in favour of Polish couple involved, we may say that the winner of EDC 2008 was not as obvious as winner of EDC 2007. Which brings us to another failure, that winners of inaugural EDC were not even invited by organizers nor to perform, nor to give prize to winners of this edition. Thus, we have a very mixed feelings on the future of the event. First of all, we need a clear rules for the contest which should be followed by both participants and organizers. Second, a proper cooperation between organizers and independent media should be established. Coverage of EDC 2008 has clearly demonstrated that independent press has brough the contest much more viewers and fans rather than non-informative official sources. We will find out the host broadcaster likely in the winter, and we hope that organization wise, EDC 2009 will at least be not worse than EDC 2008.	�� 2009 - �� . ESCKaz congratulates Polish couple Marcin Mroczek and Edyta Herbus, whose victory appeared to be rather unpredictable to Europe, but not to ESCKaz on spot reporter Roisin Butters, who predicted yesterday Polish success, despite certain lack of national colour in their dance. It seems that Marcin has some special TV appeal as he has already topped the only international version of Dancing With Stars which took place in Ukraine this year, and it helped him to succeed again with addition of reasonable Polish diaspora support. ESCKaz's Roisin Butters reports from SECC: Straight after the show the couple made their way upstairs to talk to the press about how they were feeling. After a brief introduction by Head of Eurovision TV Bjorn Erichsen who thanked the producers and the BBC for a flawless show, as well as the hosts Graham and Claudia the very happy and shocked Polish couple began answering the questions. So how were they feeling about being crowned Eurovision Dance champions? They both said it felt amazing and they were feeling very shocked. They both agreed that the whole evening had been magical and they felt that the audience had been very motivational. They were very happy with the amount of 12's they had received. So how was it backstage, waiting to be crowned winners? Marcin explained how he was a pessimist, so didn't want to start believing they had won until it was actually announced whilst Edyta said she was an optimist and had started to believe after seeing some of the publicity about the contest in papers today that they were in with a chance tonight. They both agreed that they set out to show all the hard work they and their choreographer had put in and wanted to go out their an enjoy themselves, which they did. They also spoke about how backstage all the competitors had become very close, giving each other gifts and being really supportive of one and other. So how do they think their victory will effect there lives? Marcin said that he felt it was too early to say, but both agreed that they hoped Poland was very proud of them and that they hope they had entertained people. Edyta added that all her dancing life she wants to make people feel happy when she dances and when they do she feels happy. The final question asked What effect does Edyta think their win will have on Dance Sport in Poland? She said that she was very aware of the power of tv after Strictly Come Dancing, and she hoped that it would help to contnue to encourage more people to start dancing. 06/09 ESCKaz - Delivering news first Finnish Eurovision expert Asko Murtomaki (known also for having made an degree work about Eurovision) has published today his review of favourites of the contest on his blog: "Today we will know the winner, but reviews so far seem to predict Ukraine, Russia and Azerbaijan as favourites with stakes of Poland and Denmark raising on the final day. Yesterday's rehearsal has shown that they should be mostly correct. Ukrainian dancers are very talented, and untintentionally funny with their expression. They should also get good votes only for their choice of music. Russian couple has very intence dance and their emotional choreography may look a bit over done, but at least I consider them as very theatrical and I think their selection of Vladimir Vysotski music theme. If half of Azerbaijani state budget was spent in spring for Eurovision, it seems that the other half part has sunk into first Eurodance participation. It is very difficult to see them winning as people generally are already tired of them. They also clearly breach the rules of competition trying to hide professional dancer under mask of lawyer and PR manager. They have been approved for the contest though and it is clearly not fault of the dancers, but other involved sides. Same actually goes with Greek couple, who both are former professional dancers. They all are very good dancers - but not the winners. I really think that our Finnish couple is different from others. Their dance is beautiful, delicate and touching. It has the story, the drama, passion all in suitable proportions. And of course great arrangement of Satumaa.
