Copa Sudamericana (original) (raw)

After the abolishment of the Copa Merconorte and the Copa Mercosur, a Pan-American club cup was planned (Copa Pan-Americana 2002) but failed to be organised. Instead a tournament restricted to South American clubs was established. Between 2005 and 2008, two clubs from Mexico were admitted, and reached three successive finals, with Pachuca claiming the trophy in 2006 (because of this, three Mexican clubs entered in 2007). In the same period three other clubs from CONCACAF members entered as well (DC United in 2005 and 2007, Alajuelense in 2006 and Motagua in 2008), but none of these negotiated their first tie successfully.
