The forward debuted in the Under 19's during <1988>. He then returned to Epping, before rejoining the Demons in <1989> and winning that year's Under 19s Best and Fairest. He earned himself a spot on the senior list in the <1990> finals, kicking nine goals against in the Semi Final.

Given his chance in the senior side after Melbourne's disastrous two goal Round 1, 1991 performance against the Eagles, Cuthbertson contributed two goals in each of his first two games before going goalless in the round 4 win over Carlton. Lucky to hold his place, it led to an amazing three weeks. In Round 5, the 21-year-old booted seven goals against North Melbourne in what remains Melbourne's equal highest score in a game. To prove it wasn't a fluke he kicked another seven the next Saturday at Waverley Park. Suddenly the talk of the footballing world, Cuthbertson had another five at the MCG the next week against Brisbane, and 23 goals in his first six games.

From there he had just six more goals in ten games, overshadowed by the sudden emergence of Allen Jakovich at full-forward. After a brief switch to defence he was back in the by Round 13. Cuthbertson played as a defender again in <1992>, kicking five goals in 11 games. He was linked with a trade to at the end of that year but stayed, playing another nine games in <1993> before leaving the club. He kicked 13 goals in that year's Qualifying Final but was delisted at the end of the year.

After training at Hawthorn in the <1994> pre-season but not being picked up, Cuthbertson returned to Epping. He also trained with Fitzroy before the <1995> season, then joined North Ballarat in <1998>. He played there through <1999>, later returning to Epping before joining Montmorency.
