Son of Herb Matthews, and uncle of Herbie. Trained with Melbourne during <1935> but kept playing with Fairfield before being called up for his senior debut. Played in one draw as a wingman, but even though he impressed he missed the next game because of commitments at Fairfield then couldn't force his way back in. He was allowed to return to Fairfield for <1936> while still on Melbourne's books as part of a policy of allowing surplus players to appear for their original side.
Remained on the senior list into the <1937> pre-season but didn't play senior football again until he lined up for South Melbourne in <1938>. Matthews left South in <1941> and joined side Preston, before rejoining Melbourne in <1942>. He played 14 more games before a fractured ankle during <1944> finished his VFL career. He practised with Preston in the <1945> pre-season before reappearing with Port Melbourne in <1946>.
