Entering the last game of the season a win ahead of their opponents, Melbourne entered the match with their season ruined and a position on the ladder the only thing to play for. Melbourne players had enjoyed an end of season night out during the week and duly conceded ladder position to the visitors.
A win would have seen the Redlegs finish above Essendon, Geelong and St Kilda in seventh but a quick start soon gave way to the same sort of performances which had seen them win just one game since Round 7.
It wasn't all bad for them though, they registered their highest score for the season as the two sides put defence to one side in front of the tiny crowd and put on a show instead. It was not only Geelong's first away win of the season, but their largest score since <1913>.
With two debutantes in the side Melbourne had the best of the first quarter, but Geelong improved markedly in the second and booted six goals to take the lead. When they opened the third quarter with three goals in four minutes they looked home, but Melbourne then responded with four in 10 minutes to make it interesting. The kicked another two early in the last quarter, to cut the margin to two points but then Geelong kicked five in a row to win comfortably.
Allen, Chadwick and Lilley were Melbourne's best.
