It heads north and west throughout central Texas, going through Austin, Brownwood, and Vernon along its way to Oklahoma. Its northern terminus is located at Interstate 90 in Presho, South Dakota. In Oklahoma, U.S. 183 enters signed with U.S. 70, and it is that way for the first 2.6 miles. U.S. 70 then heads east on its own towards Grandfield, Ardmore, and points beyond, but U.S. 183 continues north. Ten miles later U.S. 183 enters Frederick (pop. 4,637) and intersects OK 5. Seventeen miles north of Frederick U.S. 183 intersects U.S. 62 at a diamond interchange. U.S. 62 is a 4-lane expressway at this point. U.S. 183 then enters Snyder and intersects Business U.S. 62 (old U.S. 62). U.S. 183 skirts the east side of Hobart and shares a short three-and-a-half mile duplex with OK 9. U.S. 183 enters Cordell about 17 miles north of OK 9's eastern departure from U.S. 183. From Cordell to Interstate 40, U.S. 183 is 4-lane, divided highway. Entering Clinton from the south, U.S. 183 intersects Interstate 40 at its Exit 66. U.S. 183 jogs west along old U.S. 66 (current Bus. Loop I-40) for a couple blocks before heading north. There's a lot of nothing north of Clinton until the highway reaches U.S. 270/OK 3 northwest of Seiling. There U.S. 183 heads northwest with the other two highways and they share over 45 miles of roadway. South of Woodward, OK 34 joins the three highways and they are merged until U.S. 412/OK 15 in Woodward. At that point, U.S. 183/270/OK 3 head west, (a 5-highway multiplex!) and OK 34 heads north. The five-plex lasts just two miles, where OK 15 continues west and the other four highways (U.S. 183/270/412/OK 3) head north. The four-plex ends 14 miles later and U.S. 183 is finally alone! A short multiplex in Buffalo with U.S. 64 is the last major event for U.S. 183, and the highway enters Kansas, where it will intersect U.S. 160 14 miles north of the state line.
