Convoy MKS 36 - warsailors.com (original) (raw)

CONVOY MKS 36

Left Gibraltar on Jan. 11-1944, joined up with Convoy SL 145 from Freetown on Jan. 12, arrived Liverpool on the 24th.

Arnold Hague says that MKS 36 had started out in Port Said on Dec. 31-1943, arriving Gibraltar on Jan. 12-1944 (this arrival date must be a misprint, as he gives departure Gibraltar as Jan. 11).

Transcribed from documents (Advance Sailing Telegram) received from Tony Cooper - His source: Public Records Office, Kew. Ships in the combined convoy SL 145 / MKS 36 are named at this external website. (See also the OS / KMS convoys from the same time period). This first table shows the Gibraltar-U.K. convoy. As can be seen in the second table on this page, some of these ships had previously arrived with the Port Said convoy.

Bizerta, Jan. 7-1944 As mentioned, A. Hague says in his "The Allied Convoy System" that MKS 36 left Port Said on Dec. 31-1943 and arrived Gibraltar on Jan. 12-1944 (though this arrival date might be a misprint, as he gives departure Gibraltar as Jan. 11). The following list of ships was received from Don Kindell; his source: Arnold Hague's own research. (Don's work, which covers "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website, a section of Gordon Smith's site Naval-History.net). Automatically assuming Mr. Hague's research is correct, I have not checked the spelling and nationalities of these ships.
