| Built in Copenhagen, Denmark 1938. General cargo vessel completed by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen in July-1938, 5480 gt, 3311 net, 9275 tdwt, 442' x 58' 4", 8 cyl. two stroke cycle double acting oil engine by the shipbuilders. The following 5 pictures were very kindly sent to me by Historical Department, MAN B&W Diesel, Copenhagen - (see their museum website, external link): Pic 1 - probably from the launch, Pic 2, Pic 3, Pic 4, and Pic 5. This ship was wrecked at Prieto Diaz on Jan. 7-1939, 20 miles north of San Bernardino Island, Philippines, while on her maiden voyage from Seattle to Basrah via Manila. Leif Høegh & Co. also had a ship by this name post war, originally launched as Høegh Trader, but was seized by the Germans and sailed as Kurland during the war. | Built in Copenhagen 1940. My page M/S Høegh Silverdawn has more information, including details on some of her voyages, and several pictures. On June 15-1943 she was sunk by auxiliary cruiser Michel, southeast of the Coco Islands. I've assembled information on all the Norwegian ships captured by Michel at Norwegian victims of M/S Michel. In addition to information on the attack itself it includes a summary of the weeks the 22 from Høegh Silverdawn spent in the lifeboat, and what happened to them once they reached land, as well as a picture of the survivors, and a casualty list. | | |

Completed by Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads A/B, Malmö in Nov.-1935, 4914 gt, 2865 net, 8800 tdwt, 397' 4" x 54' 9", 5 cyl. two-stroke cycle double acting oil engine by the shipbuilders. Picture of Høegh Transporter - Scanned from Leif Høegh & Co,'s fleet list (w/permission). WW II: Struck British mine on Oct. 3-1939 and sank at the entrance to Singapore, when inward bound from Saigon,152° 7.7 cables from Outer Shoal Beacon. 1 died. ("World's Merchant Fleets 1939-1945"). Other ships by this name: Leif Høegh later had 3 more ships by this name. The 2nd one was a bulk carrier built at Dunkirk in 1962, 15 617 gt, sold in 1965 and renamed Fruen (still Norwegian). The 3rd was a tanker of 21 670 gt built in Bremen in 1958 as Esso Winchester for Esso UK, London, renamed Winchester in 1969. Bought by Leif Høegh in 1970, renamed Høegh Transporter and converted to a car carrier that same year. Sold in Febr.-1979 to Tokyo for scrapping. The 4th was a RoRo car carrier of 22 820 gt built in Gdynia, Poland in 1982, renamed Hual Transporter that same year. Sold to Panama in Dec.-1985, on bareboat charter to Leif Høegh. | | |
