For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for further details; several Norwegian ships took part.
As will be seen when going to Page 1, Mui Hock was in Hong Kong when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940, having arrived there from Shanghai the day before, remaining in that part of the world for quite some time. Some early 1941 voyages are also shown on the page and continue on Page 2, which also lists a couple of 1942 voyages. It looks like she spent a long time in Colombo, where she had arrived from Rangoon on Jan. 1-1942. Departure is given as March 13, when she proceeded to Karachi, with arrival March 21. More 1942 voyages as well as 1943 voyages are listed Page 3; convoy information for some of these can be found in the Voyage Record above. It'll be noticed, that she also had a long stay in New York at the beginning of that year.
Skipping now to June 5-1943, when I have her in the slow Convoy SC 133 from Halifax to the U.K. According to the archive document, she arrived Reykjavik (via Loch Ewe June 18/24) on June 28. Early the following month we find her in Convoy RU 80 from Reykjavik, together with Lyra. Mui Hock's final destination is given as New York on that occasion (via Loch Ewe) and she joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ONS 12*, which had originated in Liverpool on July 3 and also had Fana, Garnes (with the note "probably this convoy"), Gausdal, Hjalmar Wessel, Iron Baron, Norvarg, Para (collided, returned), Petter II, Suderøy and Tropic Star in its ranks. According to A. Hague, Mui Hock had been detached from RU 80 on July 5, joining the ONS convoy on the 7th, without going to Loch Ewe first. From Page 3 we learn that she arrived Boston on July 20, remaining there for over a month.
There's a ship by this name listed as sailing in Convoy SG 36 from St. John's, N.F. to Greenland in Dec.-1943 at the external website that I've linked to at the end of this page. This is confirmed by Arnold Hague in his Voyage Record. (As can be seen, he also has her in an earlier SG convoy to Greenland on Sept. 9-1943 - Page 4 gives her destination as Fort Chimo, when she sailed from St. John's, N.F. that day). A. Hague has her returning to St. John's at the end of Jan.-1944 with Convoy GS 41 from Greenland, arriving St. John's on Febr. 1.
In Apr.-1944 she's listed in the slow Halifax-U.K. Convoy SC 157, bound for Iceland, via Loch Ewe, with general cargo. She later returned to Loch Ewe from Iceland with Convoy RU 120 in May, and from Loch Ewe she joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 239*, originating in Liverpool June 3, arriving New York on the 22nd. Evanger, Henrik Ibsen, Idefjord, John Bakke, O. B. Sørensen, Thalatta, Torborg, Vav and Vinga are also listed. Mui Hock's subsequent movements are shown on Page 4.
In Aug.-1944 we find her in Convoy HX 303 with 16 other Norwegian ships, namely Tanafjord, Dalfonn, Noravind, Atlantic, Sommerstad, Skotaas, Geisha (Vice Commodore), Thorhild, Petter, Stirlingville, Rena, Para, Titanian, Romulus, Fjordaas and Norse Lady. Mui Hock was again bound for Iceland with a general cargo and joined this convoy with the Halifax portion, the convoy having originated in New York. She left Iceland again for Loch Ewe and Boston on Sept. 18 (17?) in Convoy RU 135, and together with Cetus, Chr. Th. Boe, Dagrun (put back), Drammensfjord, Para, Peik, Rena, Romulus and Titanian, she subsequently joined Convoy ONS 33* in order to return across the Atlantic (originated in Liverpool Sept. 29). According to the archive document mentioned above, she arrived New York on Oct. 16 and did not proceed to Boston until Nov. 9, arriving the next day.
A week later she shows up in the slow Halifax-U.K. Convoy SC 161, carrying a general cargo, destination Iceland via Loch Ewe, leaving Iceland again with Convoy RU 147; her final destination is given as New York, via Loch Ewe (the original convoy document gives departure as Dec. 22, Page 4 gives her departure Reykjavik as Dec. 25, destination Boston). For this voyage, she's listed, along with Annik (also from RU 147), Cetus, Ferncliff, Germa, Novasli and Tercero, in the westbound Convoy ONS 39*, originating in Liverpool on Dec. 28. A. Hague indicates she joined this convoy directly from RU 147, without going to Loch Ewe first(?). On Page 5, we see that she arrived Halifax on Jan. 13-1945; Boston and New York are not mentioned.
She headed back to the U.K. on Jan. 31-1945 with Convoy SC 166 from Halifax, bound for Iceland with general and lumber. She arrived Reykjavik, via Loch Ewe, on Febr. 18, then joined Convoy RU 155 at the beginning of March, destination Belfast for Halifax. For this voyage she joined Convoy ONS 44*, which originated in Liverpool on March 12 and arrived Halifax on the 31st; Mui Hock sailed from Belfast Loch on the 13th. Bernhard, Orwell and Stirlingville (Commodore Vessel) are also listed. Arnold Hague has also included Mui Hock (with Petter, which collided and returned) in Convoy SC 173*, departing Halifax on Apr. 18, arriving Liverpool May 4; Mui Hock stopped at Loch Ewe that day, continuing to Reykjavik 2 days later. Acanthus and Buttercup are named among the escorts (see SC convoy escorts). The rest of her voyages are shown on Page 5.
* The ON and ONS convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, along with further details on each. In the meantime, the ships sailing in them are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys and on the page for ships in all ONS convoys. Note also that the entire SC series will eventually be updated and completed, including the already existing convoys (some have already been updated); see ships in all SC convoys.
More details on the other Norwegian ships named on this page can be found with the help of the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index
According to this external page, she sailed as Venders for Triple Nav. Co. S.A (Venders Nav. Comp), Panama from Aug.-1963. Sold in 1969 to Fuji Marden & Co. Ltd., Hong Kong for breaking up.
