The Theatre was first opened by the RSC as the Warehouse on the 18th of July 1977. The building itself was a former 1870s built Hop Warehouse for a local brewery, later converted into a film studio.

Donald Albery bought the building in 1961 and his son Ian then set about converting it into a rehearsal studio. Donmar Productions, which was originally formed in 1953 by Donald Albery, gives the Theatre its name today, which results from the first three letters of his name and the first three letters of his wife's middle name; Margaret.

In 1977 the Royal Shakespeare Company took over the building and converted it for theatrical use under the name of the Warehouse which opened on the 18th of July 1977. Many well known Actors of today trod the boards of the Warehouse in their early careers.

In 1990 the Theatre was rebuilt by Roger Wingate who appointed Sam Mendes as his first Artistic Director. Wingate is still involved with the Theatre today, and Sam Mendes has gone on to become one of the Country's leading Theatre and Film Directors. Sam Mendes left the Theatre in 2002 and Michael Grandage then took over as Artistic Director, Josie Rourke succeeded him in 2011, and Michael Longhurst is set to become the Donmar's new Artistic Director in 2019.

The Donmar Warehouse has put on a plethora of productions since it first opened in 1977, and has received some of theatre's highest accolades including a great many Olivier Awards, Critic's Circle Awards, Evening Standard Awards, and even Tony Awards for its Broadway productions.
