In 2017 the government decided to abolish some of the counties and to merge them with other counties to form larger ones, reducing the number of counties from 19 to 11, to be implemented from 2020.:"

Gules, a royal crown Or. Motive should show that Vestfold has connection with the king. In 9th century, Vestfold was a kingdom, which gained the rule over the whole of Norway under Harald Haarfagre. Later Norwegian kings claimed that they are his sires.
