Playing Career bufc.drfox.org.uk A winger who started with on the books of Sheffield United FC, before crossing over to Sheffield Wednesday FC in June 1962, he appeared in just 22 league matches in four years, scoring three times**, before transferring to Brighton & Hove Albion FC in July 1966** (122 league appearances, eighteen goals). His last Football League season was 1970-71, after which he joined Northern League club Boston United FC, where he would play a further 219 league appearances, scoring 34 times**, he became player-manager in 1975.** Northern Premier League winners 1972-73, 1973-74; England Youth International Management Career Club(s) Became player-manager of Northern League club Boston United FC in February 1975 until the end of 1976. After which, he went to Mossley AFC for a season, he became the FA's regional director of coaching in the north-east between 1979 until 1982, when he joined Notts County FC, coached by Jimmy Sirrell, he assumed the manager's role in July 1982. Following a mediocre season, Wilkinson left to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday FC in June 1983. His success saw him noticed by Leeds United AFC, whom he joined on 10 October 1988. After huge success, Wilkinson was approached to become George Graham's successor at Arsenal in 1995. He was sacked by Leeds on 9 September 1996, despite his huge success. Wilkinson was appointed Football Association technical director on 6 January 1997. Wilkinson was reappointed caretaker manager on 7 October 2000 after the resignation of Keegan and served until appointment of his successor, temporary manager Peter Taylor on 22 October 2000. Beyond England Management Career Club(s) Throughout his tenure as England caretaker manager, Wilkinson was employed by the Football Association, in which he also looked after the Under-21 side for a short while. Wilkinson left the FA on 10 October 2002 to return to club management with Sunderland AFC, where he was sacked on 10 March 2003. He appeared for two months in the Chinese league with Shanghai Shenhua FC in March 2004, leaving on 20 May. On 12 October of that year, Wilkinson was coach at Leicester City FC for a month, and then he returned to Notts County FC on 30 December as a non-executive Director. He would also become a coaching technical director from 13 June 2006 until he left the club on 10 September 2007. On the 2 November 2007, Wilkinson became chairman of the League Managers Association. On 9 January 2009, he became Technical Advisor of Sheffield Wednesday FC.
