The crown is not described in detail, but it is also referred to as the King-helm of Turgon. It seems therefore to have been based on a military helmet, in a tradition similar to that followed in Gondor long after Gondolin had fallen. An image of the Crown, set in diamonds, stood above the Last of the Seven Gates of Gondolin at the end of the Orfalch Echor. See also...
