Podiform Be-bearing pegmatites of probable late Archean age which cut granulite-facies rocks at the south end of an unnamed island of the Field Islands, 5 km WSW of McIntyre Island, in Khamra Bay.
The first "Christmas Point" pegmatite, described by Grew (1981), is 1.5 m thick and is one of a series of en échelon pods in a layer of quartz granulite containing sapphirine, orthopyroxene, sillimanite, and garnet. This pegmatite consists of coarse-grained (>l cm) quartz, microrcline, apatite, biotite and sillimanite, and of medium-grained (mostly 0.05-2 mm) dense segregations rich in sillimanite, garnet, cordierite, biotite, yellow-brown apatite, and surinamite. In hand specimens, much of the microcline is red. Sillimanite crystals (up to 10 cm long and 3 cm across) are white or brown; brown sillimanite is chatoyant. The medium-grained segregations form irregular veins, masses, and stringers up to 5 cm across. In addition to the above listed minerals, some samples of the medium-grained segregations contain orthopyroxene, wagnerite, pyrite, "ilmeno-hematite" (titanohematite with ferrian ilmenite exsolution lamellae), magnetite, and monazite. Zircon, xenotime, corundum, and other species are less abundant.
A second beryllium pegmatite was found nearby in 1999 (Grew et al., 2000). Also this pegmatite has a quartz core, where the surinamite-bearing aggregates are more abundant, and an outer zone rich in microcline. Nodules up to 5 cm across of coarse-grained sapphirine-khmaralite in quartz are unique to this pegmatite. Another mineral exclusive of this pegmatite is magnesiotaaffeite-6N'3S.
