Mya Marie Harrison was born October 10, 1979 in Washington, DC and originally started her entertainment career as a dancer. Mya found success with her dancing eventually joining TWA (Tappers With Attitude) and studying dance with master-tapper Savion Glover. In her teen years, Mya switched to singing and landed a record contract at age 16. But by the time she reached 18, she was dancing her way up the music charts.

Mya released her next LP, Moodring. She told Rolling Stone about her LP as her most personal: "This time if I didn't write the song, then I produced it. With every song I was hands-on - the structure of the track, bringing in musicians, and wanting it to sound the way I wanted it to sound."
