Lil' Kim's rise to the ranks of rap artist began with a stormy adolescence complete with family conflicts, volatile relationships, and temporary work as a salesgirl at Bloomindales. She befriended an unknown rapper named Christopher Wallace (later to be known as The Notorious B.I.G.) who eventually helped launch her own rap career. The 2 also became romantically until (and reportedly after) The Notorious B.I.G. married songstress Faith Evans. September 13: Lil' Kim could be heard on The Notorious B.I.G.'s LP, Ready To Die and became a member of The Junior M.A.F.I.A. as 'Big Momma.' November 12: Lil' Kim released her debut LP, Hardcore. November 16: Lil' Kim topped the Billboard Rap Singles chart for 9 weeks with help from Puff Daddy with "No Time." January 6: Hardcore was certified gold. February 25: Lil' Kim could be heard on the Booty Call soundtrack with Too Short on "Call Me." March 9: Tragedy hit home for Lil' Kim when her friend, 'former' lover, and mentor, The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered. June 3: Hardcore was certified platinum.
