The outstanding Romanian (and later Hungarian) player scored 34 international goals in 61 matches for his two National Teams.
He held the Romanian caps record from May 8, 1938 (when he equalled the total of Gheorghe Albu) until March 19, 1975 (when his total was surpassed by Mircea Lucescu; according to the traditional count of Romanian caps, this happened on October 13, 1974).
He held the Romanian record of goalsfor the national team from November 29, 1931 (when he equalled the total of Rudolf Wetzer) until September 10, 1997 (when his total was surpassed by Gheorghe Hagi).
