Latvia
Note: Present-day Latvia originates in the combination of the following entities (Latvian and German names in parentheses): Livonia (Vidzeme/Livland), Lettgallia (Latgale/Lettgallen), Courland (Kurzeme/Kurland), and Semigallia (Zemgale/Semgallen). Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale are the names of pre-Christian "kingdoms." The name Livland/Livonia refers to the Livs, a people closely related to the Ests; this name is often (early and late) used for the whole "Baltic provinces," covering present-day Latvia and Estonia. During much of the country's history, from _c._1209 to 1918, the dominant elite, under all regimes, consists of German merchants and landholders, who provide much of the administration; Riga was a Hanseatic city.
1209 the bishop of Riga (archbishop from 20 Jan 1255) takes the
style of prince of Livonia (_Frst von Livland_); Livonia is
within the Holy Roman Empire
1520 rule is shared between the archbishop and the Livonian

Date on which the territorial Principality of Liechtenstein received imperial recognition. The title Prince of Liechtenstein (derived not from the territory but from Liechtenstein Castle near Vienna) was granted earlier, but only as a personal distinction. It is from one of those earlier princes, Johann Adam I Andreas, that the current prince derives his "II." The rulers of the Liechtenstein dynasty lived mainly in Lower Austria and Moravia until moving permanently to Liechtenstein in 1938.
