Jacob Lawrence: An Intimate Portrait, a 25 minute 1993 video produced by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is an engaging collage of the interior and exterior lives of one of America's most influential artists. The video interweaves talks with the charismatic Lawrence, wife, Gwendolyn Knight, colleagues, and critics, with the painter's own magnificent works. Jacob Lawrence: An Intimate Portrait was produced to accompany the 1993 exhibition_Jacob Lawrence: The Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman Series of Narrative Paintings_ at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California, which was organized by the Hampton University Museum in Hampton, Virginia. James Castle: Portrait of an Artist, is DVD of a 53-minute documentary film for the exhibition James Castle: A Retrospective (12/16/08)_,_held October 14, 2008 - January 4, 2009 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, created by writer-director Jeffery Wolf and produced by Philadelphia's Foundation for Self-Taught American Artists. James McNeill Whistler: His Etchings is a 22 minute National Gallery of Art video. "This program shows the changes in Whistler's art and in his etching style over the years, focusing on the effects he achieved by experimenting with inking and printing techniques." James McNeill Whistler: The Lyrics of Art is a 19 minute National Gallery of Art video. "This videocassette follows his life and career in America, London, Paris, and Venice. James Turrell: Passageways. A pilot for many years, James Turrell is today the greatest American land art artist, and considers the sky as his studio. Upon spectacular and historical aerial images of Arizona's canyons, Turrell recalls his formal research on natural light and his friendship with the Hopi Indians. The film gives Turrell the opportunity to present his masterpiece, Roden Crater, a true celestial light "observatory." 1995. 26 min. Jasper Johns: Decoy is an 18-minute 1972 video. "... Johns is shown working at Universal Limited Art Editions on the 18 aluminum plates used to create the lithograph Decoy. Narrated by noted art critic and writer Barbara Rose, the documentary captures Johns' inventive re-use of his subjects as he experiments with the offset lithographic process....Decoy was a landmark in the artistic use of offset lithography, and one of the artist's most important and complex print undertakings in the early 1970s." Jasper Johns: Take an Object: a Portrait, 1972-1990. Painter Jasper Johns works in his studio in 1972 repainting and discussing his "Map". John's work over the next 18 years is reviewed and illuminated by John Cage's readings of Johns' statements, a text of Samuel Beckett which Johns illustrated and the comments of the curator Mark Rosenthal. The film ends with Johns at work in his final etching of "The Seasons" in 1989. 30 min. Video/C 6390. Available from Media Resources Center, Library, University of California, Berkeley.

J. C. Leyendecker - The Great American Illustrator is a 2002 video from Kultur Video With hundreds of paintings for _The Saturday Evening Post_and other publications, J.C. Leyendecker was one of the most successful illustrators of his time. This 45 minute video biography explores the warmth and imagination that marked his work. Kultur Video says: J.C. Leyendecker was the most successful illustrator of his time, creating over 500 paintings for magazine covers - including 322 for the Saturday Evening Post - and advertisements that made his clients famous. His paintings portrayed a lifestyle that resonated with millions of Americans. Even when depicting those issues that mattered most - a woman's right to vote, the economic woes of the Depression, victory over Nazi Germany - he never employed a heavy hand or a dark mood; his images were always full of human warmth and imagination. Leyendecker told the story of consumerism as if it were lyric poetry; replacing the turbulence of cultural history with a beauteous glance, a beguiling child, a muscular vision, or a gentle hand."

Jeff Koons - The Banality Show, (c) 1990, running time: 28 minutes. Program 31 from Art/New York, which says of this video: "This program features the most talked about exhibition of the late 1980's as seen at the Sonnabend Gallery in SOHO. Included is an "in depth" interview with this notorious young artist in which he expands on his artistic vision and defends his outrageous subject matter."

Jim Dine is a 28 minute 1970 video directed by Michael Blackwood that provides a concentrated look at one of America's early Pop artists. The film was made during Dine's four-year residency in London. The artist talks about his connections to literature and about his frequent collaboration with poets; he also discusses his own poetry, some of which he reads for the camera. The parks and streets of London are the setting for Dine's frank comments about his voluntary exile in that city. On one walk, Dine encounters Gilbert and George as they endlessly repeat "Underneath the Arches" in bronze make-up, their earliest performance piece.

Jim Dine: Childhood Stories 28 minute / 1992 / OIJ - "Jim Dine, the noted American artist, reminisces on his childhood in Cincinnati and the early influences on his art in this poignant interview. The tools from the hardware store that his father and grandfather owned; the songs his mother and grandmother sang; the trips to Florida for his mother's health; all of these memories contribute to the way in which Dine now paints. The early death of his mother, however, has been the biggest influence on Dine's work. At the age of 56, he is just beginning to deal with the issues surrounding her death. Family photographs, home movies and images of Dine's art complete the picture of this complex artist."

Jim Dine: A Self-Portrait on the Walls (1995) 30 Minutes. Berkeley Media says: "This remarkable documentary records eight days of intense work and quiet rumination as internationally renowned artist Jim Dine produces an exhibition of huge, bold charcoal drawings directly on the walls of the Ludwigsburg Kunstverein near Stuttgart, Germany. It is an unusual and transitory exhibition in that the drawings remain on the walls for only six weeks before being painted over. The film admirably captures the artist's techniques, thought processes, and artistic philosophy as he works, and in his commentary Dine reflects on the special nature of such a transitory group of drawings." John Ahearn & Rigoberto Torres: Art with the Community, (c) 2000, running time: 28 minutes. Program 56 from Art/New York, which says of this video: "This program covers the work of JOHN AHEARN and RIGOBERTO TORRES, two artists who make work based on plaster casts. Since the early Eighties, John and Robert have made collaborative painted plaster portraits of friends and children in their South Bronx and East 100th Street neighborhoods. Seen on this program is John Ahearn's 2000 exhibition at the Alexander and Bonin Gallery in Chelsea and work by Rigoberto Torres shown in 1995 at the Brooke Alexander Gallery in SOHO. Also included is a visit to their East 100th Street studio where we see the fascinating process of making a plaster cast. In lengthy interviews, the artists describe their working process, ideas about art and views on collaboration."

John James Audubon: The Birds of America is a 29 minute, 1985 National Gallery of Art program directed by Steve York. After bankruptcy in business ventures in the early 19th century, John James Audubon set out on his amazing quest to render the birds of our country. His lifelong dream was realized with the publication of The Birds of America, a magnificent collection of color engravings of his watercolors, and which established Audubon as this nation's preeminent naturalist artist. The video "Traces Audubon's career as a dedicated artist who documented the entire pantheon of American birds and who wrote extensively on nature and the American wilderness. With quotations from his journals and illustrated with his original drawings and engravings, it tells the unique story of Audubon's artistic development and of his uncompromising devotion to his dream of publishing The Birds of America . John James Audubon, Drawn from Nature is a PBS "American Masters" series documentary which chronicles the life and times of John James Audubon.

John Biggers' Hampton Murals: Stories of Illumination and Growth from Hampton Roads Public Broadcasting, produced by Cinebar Productions, was well received, garnering an Emmy nomination and winning the Gold Apple at the National Educational Film and Video Festival. 29 minutes 1992 copyright Hampton University Museum. "John Biggers, artist, educator, and former Hampton University student, completed a 2-panel mural for his alma mater in 1992, and it now hangs in the new campus library as an inspiration to the university community. This video documents the creative process involved and, through interviews with Biggers, explains the multitude of images depicted. The left side of the mural, the House of the Turtle, conveys historical elements while the _Treehouse_on the right is a prayer for the future of African-Americans. Viewed on one level as a story, the mural also becomes a metaphor for transition and growth. Biggers, in his use of recurring symbols based in African art and lore, creates complex layers of meaning as an explanation of the "everchanging dance of life." John Marin's New York, a 32 minute 1993 retrospective of the Kennedy Galleries' 1981 exhibition of John Marin's New York from Marin's complex New York City Series. The video includes an original jazz score performed by Derek Smith, Jay Leonhart and others. John. Marin's modernist style melded tenets of Impressionism, Cubism and Futurism to create a signature aesthetic. This series examines New York's artistic, social and cultural evolution, from the years 1910-53. With an original jazz score by Derek Smith and Jay Leonhart.

John Singer Sargent: Outside the Frame is a 57 minute 1999 Jackson Frost television documentary produced by WETA-TV, Washington, filmed in high-definition format, and narrated by Jacqueline Bisset. As the foremost portraitist of his time, Sargent exquisitely captured in oil and watercolor the spirit of the Gilded Age. This close look at his work reveals much more than the faces of the wealthy. Emmy winner, Jackson Frost, reexamines Sargent's creations including landscapes, figures, and murals and highlights the paintings El Jaleo, Madame X, Carnation, Lily and others. _John Szarkowski: A Life in Photography_is a 47-minute video produced by Richard B. Woodward. Checkerboard Foundation, 1998. For nearly 30 years, from 1962-1991, John Szarkowski served as the Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This film examines his double life as curator and photographer. Szarkowski, author of the classic "Looking at Photographs," has taught generations how to think about and look at images.
