Ralph Gibson: Photographer/Book Artist is a 2002 28-minute video. For more than thirty years Ralph Gibson has served as one of the few truly independent forces within the art of photography. In this video biography, Gibson discusses his life and is forthcoming about what, why and how he shoots, the editorial decisions that dictate the laying out and putting together of his books, and the crucial point when he knows if a body of work is or is not complete. Raymond's Portrait: the Life and Art of Raymond Hu is a half-hour documentary that profiles the life and art of 19-year-old artist Raymond Hu. The documentary traces the personal and artistic development of this unique painter, including his difficult but ultimately rewarding experience as one of the first full-inclusion students at San Ramon Valley High School. Raymond's perspective on the challenges of growing up with Down syndrome provides a context for the powerful emotional impact of his haunting animal portraits. Through interviews with Raymond, his family, and his art teacher Lampo Leong, as well as depiction of his daily activities at school and at leisure, Raymond's sensitivity, humor, and fierce passion for life emerge on screen. Raymond's Portrait introduces us to a remarkable young man. Produced by award-winning TV producer Donald Young, the documentary was first aired on KCSM-TV60, San Mateo, Calif. on May 28, 1997. It was very well received in the San Francisco bay area and may be released nationally. The documentary has won the CINE Golden Eagle Award, the Bronze Apple from the National Educational Media Network, and First Place in Television Programming from the Peninsula Press Club. Red Grooms and "Fat Feet" is available through the Sullivan Video Library at The Speed Art Museum which holds a sizable collection of art-related videos available to educators at no charge. Red Grooms, painter, pop multi-media artist and filmmaker, talks about his new films and art work. Two films, "Washington's wig whammed" and "Fat feet" are included. The first film is an animated joke about sending a letter. Washington, pictured on the stamp, is cancelled and flips his wig. The second film "Fat feet," combining animation with live films, is a pop art view of life in the big city complete with firefighting episode and various street scenes. Red Grooms: Sunflower in a Hothouse is a 21 minute 1986 video, directed by Thomas L. Neff, received an Academy Award nomination in 1986 for Best Documentary Short. Barbara Haskell, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, offers insight into Grooms's pieces and their place within twentieth century art. Red Grooms Talks about Dali Salad is available through the Sullivan Video Library at The Speed Art Museum which holds a sizable collection of art-related videos available to educators at no charge._._As a Pop artist, Red Grooms has always been fascinated with the ordinary and the everyday. In the artwork Dali Salad, he used paper, vinyl, aluminum, wood, steel, plastic, and even Ping-Pong balls to create a lively and humorous portrait of Salvador Dali, a Surrealist painter whom Grooms describes as having "both exploited and been exploited in the print field. "A behind-the-scenes look at the production process shows how Grooms's three-dimensional print was made -- from the conception of the salad motif to the actual printing and assemblage of the work at the Minneapolis-based printmaking studio Vermillion Editions. 4 minute video from The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Richard Mayhew: Spiritual Landscapes is a 28 minute L&S video created and produced by Linda Freeman and witten and directed by David Irving. Richard Mayhew paints landscapes. These images have taken root within the the artist's inner spirit and are expressed through oil paint on canvas and watercolor on paper. Program 39 from Art/New York, which says of this video: "This program presents the fascinating paintings of Robert Colescott. Robert Rauschenberg: Retrospective. 45 minutes, color.Film by Michael Blackwood Productions "Robert Rauschenberg's art embodies the life-embracing and participatory spirit that characterizes much of American art since the 1950s. Rauschenberg recalls the valuable contacts he made at Black Mountain College, particularly with choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage, who both had a decisive influence on his thinking....Rauschenberg's active involvement with life carries over into his painting. The combine-painting of the 1950s integrated two- and three-dimensional elements and inhabited both wall and floor space. These assemblages included discarded thrift shop-type objects such as automobile tires, stuffed birds, doors, and electric light fixtures, as well as the two-dimensional painterly surfaces reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. This intense injection of real objects into his work was translated into another medium in the early 1960s: silkscreen painting. Rockwell Kent is a documentary film written, directed, and produced by Frederick Lewis. He won an Emmy for a documentary film on the Boston Marathon. Lewis is an Associate Professor & Sequence Director for Video Production at the Ohio University School of Telecommunications. The film DVD is available for $45 directly from Lewis. In their prime, Hopper retreated to Cape Cod to paint, Rockwell Kent ventured out into the far north and Tierra del Fuego as an artist, writer, and adventurer. He made waves voicing his concern for social justice. Rockwell Kent also had a disappointing ability to control his conduct in his personal life, which Lewis was circumspect in covering in deference to the requests of Kent family. Romare Bearden: Visual Jazz Reveals the work of American artist Romare Bearden (1914--1988) as he creates a collage and describes his approach: first, creating abstract relations of form and color, then adding specific imagery to produce feeling. Musician Wynton Marsalis compares the way Bearden translated experience to the jazz musician's technique of improvisation. Although Bearden loved music, there were many other influences on his art which showed a combination of rural and urban experiences and which employed many different styles. 28-minute L&S video. Roots of California Photography: the Monterey Legacy, The is a 56-minute DVD. Ventana Productions says the film "chronicles the important photographic heritage of this region and pays tribute to some of the most important men and women in American photography, masters whose creative and technical visions changed the way the world views photographic art. Photographers included are Ansel Adams, Edward, Brett and Cole Weston, Wynn and Edna Bullock, Morley Baer, Henry Gilpin, Richard Garrod, Al Weber, Sonya Noskowiak, Margrethe Mather, and John Sexton, among others." The film was narrated by Jack Lemmon and produced by the Monterey Museum of Art and The University of California, Santa Cruz Extension, Art & Design Department, The script was written by Steve Hauk and the film was directed by Steven Rosen and Terri De Bono of Mac and Ava Motion Pictures. Roy Lichtenstein. A rare Interview with the influential American artist Roy Lichtensteln. one of Pop Art's pioneers. Roy Lichtenstein: The Art of the Graphic Image is a 25 minute National Gallery of Art video. "Renowned pop artist Roy Lichtenstein discusses his printmaking career over the course of two decades. Roy Lichtenstein: Tokyo Brushstrokes. A comprehensive 30 minute 1994 Mark Trottenberg documentation of a major public sculpture by pop art master Roy Uchtenstein. Starting from a collection of brushstrokes created for collages, Lichtenstein selects images, makes models and works with architects and other artists to create a unique "brushstroke sculpture" in Tokyo. "This video offers comprehensive documentation on a major public sculpture by the Pop master, Roy Lichtenstein. Just as he drew inspiration from cartoons and advertising to produce some of the most indelible images in contemporary painting, Lichtenstein became intrigued by a brushstroke he saw in a cartoon as a "symbol" of painting.
