Margaret Fleming1

Margaret Fleming was born in 1536 at Biggar, Lanarkshire, Scotland.2 She was the daughter of Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming and Janet Stewart.1 She married, firstly, Robert Graham, Lord Graham, son of William Graham, 2nd Earl of Montrose and Lady Janet Keith, before 1547.3 She married by contract, secondly, Thomas Erskine, Master of Erskine, son of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and Lady Margaret Campbell, on 30 January 1548/49.1 She married, thirdly, John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl, son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel Rattray, on 1 April 1557.1 She died after 15 August 1584 at Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.1
From before 1547, her married name became Graham.1 From 30 January 1548/49, her married name became Erskine.1 After her marriage, Margaret Fleming was styled as Countess of Atholl on 1 April 1557. From 1 April 1557, her married name became Stewart.1 She was thought to possess powers of incantation.1

Thomas Erskine, Master of Erskine was the son of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and Lady Margaret Campbell.2 A contract for the marriage of Thomas Erskine, Master of Erskine and Margaret Fleming was signed on 30 January 1548/49.1 He died after 7 October 1551, without legitimate issue.2
He was Commendator to Dryburgh between 1541 and 1547.2 He was styled as Master of Erskine between 1547 and 1551.1 He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England in 1551.2

John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl1

John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl was born on 22 May 1563.1 He was the son of John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl and Margaret Fleming.1 He married Lady Mary Ruthven, daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart, on 24 January 1579/80 at Perth, Perthshire, ScotlandG.1 He died on 25 August 1595 at age 32 at Perth, Perthshire, ScotlandG, in embarrassed circumstances, without male issue.1
He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Atholl [S., c. 1457] on 24 April 1579.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1590.1 He was Commissioner to pursue Clan Gregor in 1589/90.2
On his death, the Earldom of Atholl (according to the charter of 1480/1) reverted to the Crown.1

Lady Mary Ruthven was the daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart.1 She married, firstly, John Stewart, 5th Earl of Atholl, son of John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl and Margaret Fleming, on 24 January 1579/80 at Perth, Perthshire, ScotlandG.1 She married by contract, secondly, John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl, son of James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath and Helen Ogilvy, on 31 March 1596.1 She married, thirdly, James Stewart, son of James Stewart, Master of Buchan and Christian Strang, before 30 August 1613.1
From 24 January 1579/80, her married name became Stewart. After her marriage, Lady Mary Ruthven was styled as Countess of Atholl on 24 January 1580.1 After her marriage, Lady Mary Ruthven was styled as Dowager Countess of Atholl on 25 August 1595.

William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie1

William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie was born circa 1543. He was the son of Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven and Janet Douglas.2 He married Dorothea Stewart, daughter of Henry Stewart, 1st Lord Methven and Lady Janet Stewart, on 17 August 1561.3 He died on 2 May 1584 at Stirling, Stirlingshire, ScotlandG, beheaded.3
He succeeded as the 7th Lord Dirletoun [S., c. 1450] on 13 May 1566. He succeeded as the 4th Lord Ruthven [S., 1488] on 13 May 1566.3 In 1567 he was suspected of showing favour to Mary Queen of Scots while she was his prisoner.3 He fought in the Battle of Langside in 1568, where he fought against Mary Queen of Scots.3 He held the office of Lord High Treasurer [Scotland] in 1571.3 He held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Perthshire.3 He held the office of Provost of Perth.3 He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1578.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1578.3 He held the office of Lord Warden of the Marches in 1578.3 He was created 1st Earl of Gowrie [Scotland] on 23 August 1581.1 On 23 August 1582 he kidnapped King James VI in the ‘Raid of Ruthven.3' He was pardoned after the King's escape but later arrested and convicted of high treason.3

Henry Stewart, 1st Lord Methven was born between 1495 and 1500.2 He was the son of Andrew Stewart, 1st Lord Avandale and Margaret Kennedy.3 He married, firstly, unknown Leslie.3 He married, secondly, Lady Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII Tudor, King of England and Elizabeth Plantagenet, on 3 March 1528.4 He married, thirdly, Lady Janet Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl and Lady Janet Campbell, before 4 November 1544.5 He died after 10 October 1551.4,3
He was created 1st Lord Methven [Scotland] on 17 July 1528.6 He fought in the Battle of Pinkie on 10 September 1547.

John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl was born circa 1566.1 He was the son of James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath and Helen Ogilvy.1 He married, firstly, Lady Margaret Lindsay, daughter of David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford and Katherine Campbell, on 27 October 1582, with a dowry of 9500 marks.1,2 He married by contract, secondly, Lady Mary Ruthven, daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart, on 31 March 1596.1 He died between 26 August 1603 and 8 October 1603 at Kincardine, Strathern, ScotlandG.1
He succeeded as the 6th Lord Innermeath [S., 1469] before May 1579.1 He was created 1st Earl of Atholl [Scotland] on 6 March 1595/96.1 In 1597 he besieged the House of Morcleuch, and captured its owner, Walter Leslie.3

James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath was born between 1537 and 1539.2 He was the son of John Stewart, 4th Lord Innermeath and Elizabeth Bethune.2 He married Helen Ogilvy, daughter of James Ogilvy, 4th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie and Helen Sinclair, before 7 July 1554.2 He died on 14 February 1585/86.2
In 1569 he was one of the hostages for Queen Mary of Scots.2 He was Commissioner for quieting the public troubles within the realm.3 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Innermeath [S., 1469] in January 1569/70.2 He was Councillor Extraordinary in 1577/78.3
