Built in Michigan, U.S.A. 1919. Previous names: Lake Fackler until 1923, Bolivar until 1937, Hwa Dah until 1938.

Pre war history (from a posting to my Ship Forum): Built as Lake Fackler for the U S Shipping Board. Renamed Bolivar in 1922(?), owned by Colombian S S Co. Sold in 1937 to Cathay Steel Sash Factory and renamed Hwa Pah. Sold in 1938 to Wallem & Co Ltd and renamed Bolivar, registered in Panama.

WW II: Sprang a leak and foundered on August 27-1940 in 16 42N 92 41E, when on a voyage from Calcutta to Rangoon with a cargo of coal, no casualties.

1 of the 26 ships that were interned in West and North Africa at the same time as my father's ship D/S Ringulv. My page Interned Ships lists all 26. Bosphorus was interned in Algiers on June 22-1940 (according to "Nortraships flåte"). Renamed Ste Mathilde when requisitioned by the Vichy French, but was not used by them.

All built in Middlesbrough 1930.

Whale catchers, built for A/S Sevilla (Waalman & Bugge), Tønsberg in 1930. Jan-Olof, Sweden has told me that according to Lloyd's they were owned by Sevilla Whaling Co. Ltd and managed by Chr. Salvesen & Co, while Ulf W. Gustavsen, Norway (who researches whale catchers) says they were purchased by Chr. Salvesen & Co., Leith in 1932, in which case they really don't belong on this website, but I'll leave them in case someone is looking for info on them.

WW II: All hired by Royal Navy in March 1940 for use as minesweepers (note that they are listed in Convoy HGF 29 in May-1940), and all returned to owners after the war, as follows:

POST WAR: Bouvet 1 - Returned to Chr. Salvesen & Co. in 1945. Lost near Leith Harbour in the fall of 1964 due to extreme snowfall.
Bouvet 2 - Returned to Chr. Salvesen & Co. in Apr.-1946. Sold to Chile in 1947 and renamed Indus 8. Ran aground near Valparaiso on Nov. 15-1964.
Bouvet 3 - Returned to Chr. Salvesen & Co. in Apr.-1946. Sold in 1949 to Canada (BC), no name change. Renamed Westwhale 2 in 1962. Broken up in Vancouver in 1965.
Bouvet 4 - Returned to Chr. Salvesen & Co. in Apr.-1946. Sold to Chile in Sept.-1946, renamed Indus 7, later Ruiz 1.
