Gary Rawnsley | Aberystwyth University (original) (raw)
I research and teach at the intersection of international relations and international communications with particular reference to Asia (and especially China and Taiwan). My main areas of interest are propaganda, public diplomacy and soft power, strategic communications and information warfare, and democratisation and the media. I am the author and editor of over 12 books and numerous journal articles, journalism and media appearances on the above subjects. I am also involved in the University's internationalisation strategy and hope to create and facilitate more research and teaching links between Aberystwyth and universities across the world. I Chair the University's International and Collaborative Partnerships Committee, and was the Chair of the management committee to establish the Mauritius campus of Aberystwyth University. My job includes the regular visit to our foreign partners to discuss our relationship, including research links, teaching collaboration and student recruitment.

It provides an abundance of information about the levels of freedom, tolerance, social justice and pluralism within a political system. This article reviews the changes in the Taiwanese media that have occurred since the lifting of martial law in 1987 and considers how the media are faring at the beginning of Chen Shui-bian’s second term. Taiwan’s media are still at an early stage of democratisation but it cannot be denied that progress has been made and that Taiwan’s media are looking increasingly like those operating in systems at comparatively similar stages of democratic consolidation.
