A curriculum to train teacher candidates is a very important factor in developing teacher candida... more A curriculum to train teacher candidates is a very important factor in developing teacher candidates' conceptual understanding of scientific concepts. Teacher candidates have a dramatic impact on students' ability to understand and construct new knowledge of the concepts. The purpose of this study was to determine the preconceptions and misconceptions of teacher candidates about basic astronomy concepts. This was measured by administrating the validated diagnostic questions from the latest version of the Astronomy Diagnostic Test 2.0-113 teacher candidates in the School of Education in Amasya University, Turkey. The findings indicated that teacher candidates held a series of misconceptions on several basic astronomy concepts. Common misconceptions were identified and a constructivist-inquiry approach to teaching basic astronomy concepts in the astronomy curriculum for pre-service teachers was proposed.

Chemisorbed surface hydroxy-formate species on Pb 110 , formed by reacting gaseous HCOOH with pre... more Chemisorbed surface hydroxy-formate species on Pb 110 , formed by reacting gaseous HCOOH with pre-adsorbed Ž. Ž. atomic oxygen, yields O 1s and C 1s photoelectron peaks at 531.3 and 288.3 eV, respectively. The three desorption features can be assigned as multilayer HCOOH at 190 K, a monolayer formic acid at 230 K and a metastable state Ž. hydroxy-formate at 300 K. Heating the overlayer in vacuum to 450 K results in removal of all surface hydroxyl although the higher temperature peak which corresponds to the recombination of surface protons with formate species remains stable. The formate species desorbs partially from the metal surface with extensive decomposition as Ž. shown by a large C 1s residue at ; 285.0 eV.

The purpose of this study is to assess the in-service needs of science teachers of the gifted stu... more The purpose of this study is to assess the in-service needs of science teachers of the gifted students with the help of needs assessment approach. In this research case study approach was used and data were gathered with the help of Needs Assessment In- Service Education Survey (NAIS). Sampling consists of nine science teachers working at the Bayburt and Trabzon Science Art Centers. Survey studies were implemented at these centers and data were analyzed. Data indicated that these teachers needs an in-service course about project based learning and activities, internet application about education of the gifted, modern learning theories and activities, Bloom\'s taxonomy and formal operations, models for the education of the gifted,, action research model, laboratory approaches. This research aimed to examine the science attitudes of gifted students attending the science and... more This research aimed to examine the science attitudes of gifted students attending the science and art centers (SAC) in Turkey depending on variables such as gender of students, their fields of education, classroom level and the education levels of their families. The test of science related attitudes (TOSRA), developed by Fraser (1978), simplified by Chaerul (2002) and translated into Turkish and the validity and reliability of which were studied by Curebal (2004), was used in the research. It was observed that there was no statistical difference between the science attitudes of students and the above-mentioned variables. A general analysis of the obtained results was performed comparatively with the studies at national and international levels. In line with the results, a discussion was made on what could be done particularly regarding the science and technology instruction of students at SACs which were developed as a suitable model for country conditions.

Inclusion is an educational approach providing students with special needs with education in norm... more Inclusion is an educational approach providing students with special needs with education in normal classrooms, which is the least restrictive educational environment for them by offering the necessary services for full time or part time. Although the necessary laws and regulations appear to execute this inclusive practice properly in Turkey, there are some problems regarding its implementation. Aim of this study contributes to the implementation by determining and solving the problems encountered in the inclusive practices by developing an assessment instrument comparing the attitude, concern and interaction levels of pre-service and in-service elementary teachers towards inclusive education. The study sample consists of 68 in-service elementary teachers working at central elementary schools in Amasya and 112 pre-service elementary teachers in the elementary education program of Amasya University during the 2009-2010 academic year. For the study, an assessment consisting of four parts was developed and applied as a data collection instrument. The data gathered from the study was analyzed using the SPSS 18.00 package program. With the findings obtained, it has been determined that there are significant differences between the in-service and pre-service teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education and their interactions with individuals with special needs. It has been concluded that these differences are related to occupational experience and the preparation levels of the individuals with special needs. The findings of this study suggest that professional development workshops and seminars on special and inclusive education would improve the knowledge of in-service elementary teachers and enhance the qualification of the inclusive practices.

Akademik erteleme, öğrenme görevlerinin etkin bir şekilde gerçekleştirilmesinin akılcı olmayan bi... more Akademik erteleme, öğrenme görevlerinin etkin bir şekilde gerçekleştirilmesinin akılcı olmayan bir biçimde geciktirilmesidir. Her düzeydeki öğrenenler için öğrenme görevlerinin ertelenmesi söz konusu olabilir. Akademik erteleme davranışı gösteren öğrenenlerin bu davranışları ile bilişsel farkındalık düzeyleri arasında yakın bir ilişki olduğu düşünülmektedir. Öğretmen adaylarının da bilişsel farkındalık ve erteleme düzeylerinin belirlenmesi ve bu yönde alınacak önlemler daha nitelikli adayların yetiştirilmesine katkı sağlayacaktır. Bu çalışma ile öğretmen adaylarının akademik erteleme davranışları ile bilişsel farkındalık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Araştırma nicel desenli olup, ilişkisel tarama modelindedir. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak "akademik erteleme" ile "bilişsel farkındalık ölçeği"nden yararlanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS istatistik programı kullanılmış, araştırma sorunu paralelinde t-testi, ANOVA, korelasyon ve regresyon analizlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre öğretmen adaylarının "orta" düzeyde akademik erteleme davranışı gösterdikleri ve erkek öğretmen adayların anlamlı derecede kadın öğretmen adaylarından daha çok akademik erteleme davranışına yöneldikleri görülmüştür. Bunun yanında öğretmen adaylarının bilişsel farkındalık düzeyleri "yüksek" farkındalık düzeyi olarak belirlenirken, bu farkındalığa kadın öğretmen adayların daha çok sahip oldukları gözlemlenmiştir. Bilişsel farkındalık düzeyleri bölümlere göre bir farklılık göstermemiş, bölümünü isteyerek okuyan öğretmen adayları açısından da anlamlı derecede istemeyerek okuyanlara göre olumlu yönde farklılaşmıştır. Akademik erteleme ile bilişsel farkındalık arasında negatif yönde ve düşük düzeyde bir ilişki görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte yapılan regresyon analizinde de bilişsel farkındalığın akademik ertelemeyi yordayıcı bir değişken olarak görülebileceği bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. Sonuç olarak öğretmen adaylarının bilişsel farkındalık düzeyleri yükseldikçe daha az akademik erteleme davranışı gösterdikleri söylenebilir.

The purpose of this study was to determine chemistry teachers’ views of creativity. In this study... more The purpose of this study was to determine chemistry teachers’ views of creativity. In this study, phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research patterns, was used. The participants of this study were 13 chemistry teachers working in Amasya. A semi-structured interview form was used for data collection. By using NVivo 9 qualitative analysis software, data were coded and themes were created. Findings indicated that the chemistry teachers associated creativity with intelligence and view creativity as an essential factor for problem solving skills and creating novel ideas. Chemistry teachers thought that there were cultural barriers for creativity. In the related literature, the studies regarding teacher perceptions of the gifted characteristic... more In the related literature, the studies regarding teacher perceptions of the gifted characteristics and their education are needed in Turkish context. This study was conducted with the aim of identifying teachers’ perceptions of gifted children’s characteristics and gifted education. The study has a qualitative nature with quantitative orientation. The participants of the study were 95 teachers who serve in Amasya. Structured interview form was used to collect data. The collected data were coded and themes were gathered with QSR Nvivo 11 software. Direct quotations were made and findings were compared with related literature. It was seen that the teachers perceived giftedness as an innate ability and associated it with achievement. Also most of the teachers believed that gifted education services should be continued in diverse schools rather than just in the regular ones.

The aim of this study is analyzing, through a theoretical-model, variables that are related in re... more The aim of this study is analyzing, through a theoretical-model, variables that are related in relevant literature with gifted students' abilities in science course. Within that context various analyses have been conducted with respect to environmental, cognitive and affective variables which are linked to students' science ability. In this paper, one of the quantitative research methods, survey method, has been implemented. Data were collected from 997 middle-school level gifted students selected via stratified sampling method from Science and Art Centers across 25 different cities in Turkey. Path analysis was implemented to analyze data. It was determined that if parental and teacher involvement and positive school climate were met; scientific ability, creativity and motivation of gifted students could climb. It was also ascertained that results of implemented path analysis and tested model complied with the data. Thus could be used to explain variables that affected scientific ability, scientific creativity, problem solving and meta-cognitive awareness which are deemed to be related with science ability. It was concluded that approaches of parents, teachers and school administration left remarkable effects on ability development.

Özel durum yönteminin izlendiği bu çalışmada verilerin toplanması amacı ile bir Hizmet-içi İhtiyaç Değerlendirme Anketi (HİDA) hazırlandı. Çalışmanın örneklemini Bayburt ve Trabzon Bilim Sanat Merkezlerinde görev yapan 9 fen öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. ÖZET Bu çalışma üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin fen öğretmenlerinin hizmet içi ihtiyaçlarını ihtiyaç... more ÖZET Bu çalışma üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin fen öğretmenlerinin hizmet içi ihtiyaçlarını ihtiyaç değerlendirme yaklaşımını kullanarak belirlemek amacı ile tasarlanmıştır. Özel durum yönteminin izlendiği bu çalışmada verilerin toplanması amacı ile bir Hizmet-içi İhtiyaç Değerlendirme Anketi (HİDA) hazırlandı. Çalışmanın örneklemini Bayburt ve Trabzon Bilim Sanat Merkezlerinde görev yapan 9 fen öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Hizmet-içi İhtiyaç Değerlendirme Anketi, örneklem de yer alan öğretmenlere uygulandı ve elde edilen veriler analiz edildi.Verilerin analizi neticesinde örneklem de yer alan öğretmenlerin bir çok konuda ihtiyaç belirtmelerine rağmen en fazla proje tabanlı öğrenme yaklaşımı ve etkinlikler, yeteneklilikle ilgili ınternet siteleri ve süreli yayınlara ulaşım, modern öğretim teorileri ve uygulamalı etkinlikler, Bloom taksonomisi ve formal operasyon dönemi özellikleri, dünyadaki yetenek geliştirme modelleri, araştırmacı öğretmen modeli ve laboratuar yaklaşımları konularında...
