The aim of paper is to present wrtitings composed by Critobulus of Imbros, together which some re... more The aim of paper is to present wrtitings composed by Critobulus of Imbros, together which some remarks, especially from historiosophical point of view. For him the most important thing was to explain halosis in terms of traditional Byzantine historiosophy. Streszczenie. Celem tekstu jest przedstawienie twórczości Kritobulosa z Imbros wraz z komentarzem ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem aspektu historiozoficznego. Dla niego bowiem podstawową kwestią było wytłumaczenie halosis w kategoriach tradycyjnej bizantyńskiej historiozofii.

Drugą część książki stanowi komentarz historiograficzny do przedstawionych źródeł w formie geograficznego leksykonu Barbaricum: północnej, środkowej i wschodniej Europy z przyległymi częściami Azji. The aim of the present paper is to discuss and translate in Polish the poem of Bonawentura Graszy... more The aim of the present paper is to discuss and translate in Polish the poem of Bonawentura Graszyński, written in 1919; with some remarks on author’s interests in Byzantine studies.The poem about foundation of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań was composed in Classical Greek by Bonawentura Czesław Graszyński (1859–1922) in 1919. Graszyński, polish lecturer of classical languages, had also composed few dramas concerning Byzantine realities. The Poem contains ten elegiac distiches with appeal to the Muses for gracing University, which had been recently founded. This article contains an analysis of Eusebius of Caesarea’s response to the Lover of Truth writte... more This article contains an analysis of Eusebius of Caesarea’s response to the Lover of Truth written by Sossianus Hierocles.Eusebius of Caesarea, a great scholar, “son of Pamphilus”, was one of the most influential persons during the first half of the fourth century AD in the Roman Empire. He was active as a bishop, theologian, politician and historian. Among his numerous literary works (six volumes of Patrologia Graeca) we are interested in a short polemical treatise, entitled Contra Hieroclem. Sossianus Hierocles, successively praeses of Palmyra and Bithynia, vicarius Orientis, praefectus Aegypti, about the year 303 wrote a criticism on the claims of the Christians, lost pamphlet in two books, called Philalethes. In part of his paper, concerning wonderful works of Apollonius, Hierocles used Philostratus’ Vita Apollonii. Contra Hieroclem is a response to the Lover of Truth. Powyższy artykuł poświęcony został analizie mów (tzn. wypowiedzi w oratio recta) w Historii pows... more Powyższy artykuł poświęcony został analizie mów (tzn. wypowiedzi w oratio recta) w Historii powszechnej Teofilakta Symokatty, najważniejszym dziele historiografii bizantyńskiej pierwszej połowy VII w. Przeprowadzony przegląd pozwolił na dokonanie konkretnych ustaleń. Mianowicie, Teofilakt w pełni akceptuje rolę kompozycyjną mów (zgodnie z tradycją klasyczną) w aspekcie a) mowy jako możliwość wypowiedzi własnej autora, b) mowy jako środek wzmocnienia płaszczyzny aksjologicznej, tzn. to, co mówione posiada wiarygodność wyższą od tego, co przekazane w mowie pośredniej (oratio obliqua itp.). Niemniej, uważna lektura pozwoliła wyodrębnić cechy szczególne stylu Teofilakta. Są nimi: nadmierna afektacja, brak dobrego smaku w doborze egzemplów i, niestety, nadużywanie argumentacji religijnej, zbliżające się do fanatyzmu (chociaż w tym ostatnim wypadku należy przeprowadzić badania, by stwierdzić, czy jest to kwestia osobista, czy ‘duch czasów’, tzn. polityka religijna Herakliusza). Problematyka wołoska w twórczości Jerzego Akropolitesa
Twórczość Jerzego Akropolitesa, zarówno z zakresu historiografii, jak i retoryki, nie zawiera wie... more Twórczość Jerzego Akropolitesa, zarówno z zakresu historiografii, jak i retoryki, nie zawiera wiele informacji na temat Włachów. Ich obecność jest zawsze drugorzędną wypadkową w opisie innych wydarzeń, ocenianych z perspektywy interesów dynastii Paleologów. Niemniej, nieliczne wzmianki o Włachach mają dużą wartość z zakresu geografii historycznej, będąc pomocne zwłaszcza w rozumieniu stosowania pojęcia tzw. „Wlachii” (w kilku odmiankach) na niektóre obszary Grecji północnej i zachodniej. Przedstawiony artykuł zawiera: a) przegląd całości twórczości Jerzego Akropolitesa, b) przetłumaczone fragmenty z dzieła Akropolitesa pt. Historia, zaopatrzone w komentarz filologiczno-historyczny, c) aneks, w którym umieszczono krótkie uwagi o wartości dla badań historycznych wzmianek o Włachach w arcydziele literackim kreteńskiego renesansu, Erotokritosie W. Kornarosa.

Slavs in Theophylact Simocatta’s „Universal History” – a Byzantine axiological perspective The Un... more Slavs in Theophylact Simocatta’s „Universal History” – a Byzantine axiological perspective The Universal History of Theophylact Simocatta constitutes a very important source for the history of the Later Roman Empire, especially within the context of appearance of the Avars and the Slavs in the Balkans. This article confirms the high reliability and great value of Theophylact’ s narrative concerning the Slavs in the last two decades of the sixth century. In the second part, some new remarks have been given, which argue for the authenticity of the famous episode about Slavs “living at the end of the Western Ocean” (6.2). Moreover, the author is firmly convinced that the so-called Western Ocean should be identified with the Baltic Sea. The conclusions substantiate the theory that Nikephoros had been part of the imperial theatron before his downfall in the mid-1150s.

This book presents the proceedings of the conference “The Chronicle of Theophanes: sources, compo... more This book presents the proceedings of the conference “The Chronicle of Theophanes: sources, composition, transmission,” organized by the editors in Paris in September 2012. The first section of the volume is devoted to the question of the authorship of the Chronicle, raised by C. Mango almost forty years ago. The second section is devoted to issues of transmission, both direct (manuscript tradition) and indirect (readership, translations). The third section concerns Theophanes’ sources for early Byzantine history. A separate section hosts papers by some of the major actors in the current debate on Theophanes’ Eastern source. The last section of the book deals with the later part of the Chronicle and with its sources. ISBN 978-2-916716-58-9
