The inscriptions offer new results and aspects for the Byzantine administrative history, prosopography, historical geography, and economic history, but furthermore concern the Byzantine church, monasteries, domains, and especially the Byzantine aristocracy. Short English abstracts contribute a kind of regestes, representing the value of the contents. The book is an attribution to basic research (Grundlagenforschung) of Byzantine history and culture.

Ioannes Branas, commander of (or in) Arta, informed as quickly as possible Leon Sgouros, the most powerful lord in Greece, about the Crusaders' lodging on Kerkyra (not far from Arta) (they had arrived on May 4, 1203, as it is attested by Geoffroi de Villehardouin), in order to take common countermeasures and logistic preparations against forthcoming invasions into Byzantine territory. A courier brought the information together with a sealed letter of Branas to Sgouros. The latter himself confirmed with the imprint of his boulloterion that he had received and read the letter and sent the messenger with additional instructions back to Branas. The double-struck seal stems from the span between May 4 and 24, 1203 (depart of the Crusaders form the island, the starting point for the first occupation of Constantinople, July 7, 1203).

The author dates the creation of the Themata of Makedonia and Strymon to the end of the 8 th century, while the Theme of Thessaloniki, of a lower rank, was established at the turning point of the 8 th to the 9 th century. During the reign of Romanos Lekapenos, the region around the Rupel pass was strengthened by the addition of a Kleisurarch to blunt more efficiently Bulgarian assaults, especially in the early years of tsar Peter. Ioannes Tzimiskes then established the Thema Neos Strymon at the north of the Rupel, a kind of prolongation of the old Thema of Strymon which was called, for a short time, Στρυµὼν ἤτοι Χρυσάβα. The identification of Chrysaba with Krousobon (Achladochori) or Kričuva (Karydochori) is dismissed.

Emperor Theophilos established the latter as a counterweight against the powerful Armenian faction at court and even married him to his sister Helene. In order to strengthen Theophobos' position at court and to legitimize his ascension into the imperial family, the emperor created the terminus technicus ἐξουσιαστὴς τῶν Περσῶν, which is to translate as "potentate of the Persians". We thus distance ourselves from Zuckerman's interpretation, which seeks to recognize in this term a degradation of Theophobos after the birth of Michael III (840).
We gain a new perspective into the history of this contingent (after the execution of Theophobos, anno 842) from a unique seal (first half of the 10th century), which mentions an officer of lower rank who served in the theme army: Theophilos β. σπαθαροκανδιδᾶτος καὶ κόμης τῶν Περσῶν. His name probably goes back to one of his ancestors, who was named like the emperor Theophilos.

This article concerns the edition, dating, historical interpretation and contextualisation of a r... more This article concerns the edition, dating, historical interpretation and contextualisation of a remarkable metrical inscription of a seal (ca. last third of the 12th – beginning
of the 13th century). The owner of this seal, Leo, who bore the no longer prestigious title of
sebastos, aims to highlight his elevated social standing by emphasizing his noble descent.
He stresses that he is a descendant of the “ruler Monomachos”. This does not refer to
the former Byzantine emperor Constantine IX (1042–1055), but probably to Vladimir II
Monomakh (1113–1125), the ruler of Kievan Rus᾿, who adapted his Byzantine mother’s
surname, thus placing the Monomachoi dynasty at the top of the social pyramid of the Rus᾿. The owner of the seal could have been a grandchild or a great-grandchild of Leo
Diogenesevich († 1116) and Maria († 1146), a daughter of Vladimir II; Leo the sebastos
probably emigrated to the Byzantine territory or established contacts and relationships
with Byzantium

A new seal type sheds additional light on the policy of the orthodox Byzantine Church around the middle of the 11th c. in the doukate (administrative unit) of Megale Armenia: It mentions a male Byzantine Monastery of the Virgin of Arayi (southeast of the Aragac mountain, north-northwest of Yerevan), and testifies the Byzantine Ecclesiastical Policy in Greater Armenia.

The new sigillographical evidence proves that the thesis about a migration of the family under Alexios I (1081-1118) to Byzantium is erroneous and must be rejected. The family belonged already to the military aristocracy before the middle of the eleventh century. The social rise of the Kamytzai in the framework of the Komnenian system is attested in the early 12th c. The rebellion of Manuel Kamytzes against the regime of Alexios III was the reason for the only brief social decline of the family. After the capture of Constantinople by the Latins the family migrated to the court of the Lascarids in Nicaea. The decline of the Kamytzai there is connected with the coronation of Michael VIII. After that date no more members are recorded in high positions, but the family continued to belong to the aristocracy till the fourteenth century abd was connected by marriage with the Batatzai.

The time period under discussion extends from the reign of Basil II until the end of the XIth century and includes arguments for structural changes. Such an undertaking would have been nearly impossible without the recovery of seals during the past decades since the literary sources off er only limited information. But now we can off er new insights. We lay special emphasis on the date when the important military commands were established (or re-established) under a strategos, then a katepano or doux, and when new themes under a strategos, those not yet present in the Taktikon Escorial – were organized.

So we must not consider the latter as the common ancestor of all the people with the family name Tatikios already documented on seals of the 11th C. In nattive sources they start only under Manouel I, and they were generals of the imperial army. We could not detect any direct marriage alliance with the imperial family: Michael Tatikios, mentioned in an epigram of MS. Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, gr. Z 524, had only a distant kinship with the Komnenoi. The traces of Tatikioi at the imperial court disappear after the rebellion of Constantine Tatikios against the regime of Isaakios II. The tatikioi in Byzantium had probably a Turkish origin (in general sense).

INSCRIBING TEXTS
IN BYZANTIUM:
CONTINUITIES AND TRANSFORMATIONS
18-20 March 2016, Exeter College, Oxford

In spite of the striking abundance of extant primary material – over 4000 Greek texts produced in the period between the sixth and fifteenth centuries – Byzantine Epigraphy remains largely uncharted territory, with a reputation for being elusive and esoteric that obstinately persists. References to inscriptions in our texts show how ubiquitous and deeply engrained the epigraphic habit was in Byzantine society, and underscore the significance of epigraphy as an auxiliary discipline. The growing interest in material culture, including inscriptions, has opened new avenues of research and led to various explorations in the field of epigraphy, but what is urgently needed is a synthetic approach that incorporates literacy, built environment, social and political contexts, and human agency. The SPBS Symposium 2016 has invited specialists in the field to examine diverse epigraphic material in order to trace individual epigraphic habits, and outline overall inscriptional traditions. In addition to the customary format of panel papers and shorter communications, the Symposium will organise a round table, whose participants will lead a debate on the topics presented in the panel papers, and discuss the methodological questions of collection, presentation and interpretation of Byzantine inscriptional material.
