- September is Guide Dog Access Awareness Month! 🦮 This month is all about educating people on proper guide dog etiquette, the rights of guide dog handlers, the legislation that protects them, and championing equal access for guide dog handlers. Many of the barriers guide dog handlers face stem from a lack of awareness. Often, people don’t realize how their actions, like distracting a guide dog while it’s working or refusing access to a guide dog team, can have serious consequences. You can’t discriminate against someone who works with a guide dog, and you can’t deny access to a guide dog team. Guide dogs belong everywhere. It’s the law! By learning more about guide dogs, you can help shift social attitudes towards guide dogs, ensuring that the rights of guide dog teams are always respected. To learn how you can help make your community more welcoming to guide dog teams, visit guidedogchampions.ca[Image description: The top of the guide dog's head against a yellow background. The dog is a black lab, and its head appears halfway down the page. The text "Guide dogs belong everywhere. - How CNIB is Honouring Indigenous Communities Through Art. We’re committed to creating inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity. Discover the rich symbolism behind the Indigenous art installations in our CNIB offices. Collaboratively designed by Haida and Mi'kmaq artists, these pieces represent a journey toward reconciliation and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples across Canada. Explore the stories behind each intricate symbol and learn more about our commitment to reconciliation: https://lnkd.in/eAQp9yXtImage description: A CNIB art installation titled "Reconciliation - The Way Forward." On the left, the text includes a land acknowledgement and description of the Indigenous icon and a QR code below. To the right is the icon designed by Haida artist April White and Mi’kmaq artist Lorne Julien. It features an eye symbolizing witness, waves for the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, an eight-point Mi’kmaq star with an eagle, and a Mi’kmaq double curve mosaic symbolizing Mother Earth. The yellow circle represents a Potlatch ring.
CNIB stands with Indigenous communities as we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we honour the Survivors and lost children of residential schools, their families, and communities. We recognize the ongoing impact of these institutions and commit to reconciliation. CNIB is committed to working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities to ensure a more inclusive future for Indigenous Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. We recognize our responsibility as settlers to actively work towards reconciliation and address systemic injustices experienced by Indigenous peoples. Read CNIB's Reconciliation Plan: https://lnkd.in/gk-ZdkPu #NDTR #EveryChildMatters #ReconciliationImage description: A vibrant orange image showcasing a bird soaring over a river with a narwhal and a beaded flower, representing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. The image also includes stars, symbolizing children lost in residential schools, and a pathway representing the road to reconciliation. The orange colour represents truth-telling and healing. - As Guide Dog Access Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re reminded of the important role that guide dogs play in fostering independence for their handlers and helping people who are blind, Deafblind, or who have low vision live the lives they choose. 🦮 Did you know that the journey to becoming a guide dog starts early with the help of puppy raisers? These volunteers open their hearts and homes to nurture a pup through their early months and prepare them to become a partner in mobility for someone who is blind. Consider becoming a puppy raiser. Your love and care can help shape a future guide dog and change people’s lives. Visit cnib.ca/puppyraising to learn more about how you can get involved and volunteer with CNIB Guide Dogs [Image description: A smiling woman holds a young yellow puppy.
