A good design means the integration of appropriate construction techniques and the existing related knowledge and technology. The landscape architecture reflects its concepts and construction of that time. The writer, therefore, explains these concepts by comparing projects of different periods.

Controversy after announcing any urban land policy has occurred regularly. Most of them involve the diversity of needs and conflict in directions of utilization. The author uses the abbreviation ?WiMBY' (an antonym of ?NiMBY') as the analysis tool to compare the heterogeneity of interests in publicly owned land utilization. The author reviewed the failures and successes of urban land utilization projects on all continents, especially cases of controversy. Factors involved in decision-making are compared herein to find homogeneity / heterogeneity of patterns by partially using a quantitative analysis tool. The provided opportunities involve three major directions of the ?land redevelopment tripod': economic, social, and environmental. Implications of WiMBY CIA will be generalized for a further comparative policy study with multi-stakeholders, to understand the diversity of attitudes optimistically, and to deliver greater consensus in future decision-making.

Organizations working towards standardization have defined universal standards for Best Managemen... more Organizations working towards standardization have defined universal standards for Best Management Practices (BMPs) for renewable energy (RE) projects. However, these universal standards are better suited to large-scale than small-scale projects such as community renewable energy (CRE) projects. Methods used by CRE projects to achieve BMP status remain to be determined. This paper aims to present various aspects of BMPs for small-scale CRE projects by emphasizing practices that are unrestricted, simple, and adaptable to the surrounding environment, and that will eventually lead to sustainability in the community. The case study involves RE projects at the 'Sathya Sai School Thailand,' an education-based community which has a community-like organizational management. The community implements CRE projects for educational-awareness program and to serve their energy needs, starting with micro scale in the community which then will impact on the reduction of climate change crisis at global level. The methodologies used for initial assessment of the involvement of residents and stakeholders, attitude of residents towards CRE project management, and attitudes towards the benefits of CRE project management included (1) field research (i.e., field observations and key-person interviews) and (2) a preference questionnaire. The results identify strengths and weaknesses of CRE project management, and are used to evaluate whether CRE project management constitutes a BMPs by using 'The scale and sustainability score sheet' tool. Moreover, recommendations for CRE projects to achieve BMPs status for sustainable community RE are generated from synthesis of sustainability ratings of CRE project management and integration of BMPs theory with the gaps and weaknesses of CRE project management. In conclusion, solutions focus on 'actual problem-based solving approach', understanding CRE project management problems and sustained practices by community residents are at the core of BMPs. Experiences can be shared by exchanging RE knowledge among academic and professional networks, and this exchange may improve the suitability of REs in relation to dynamic changes in environmental conditions.

Map Ta Phut was designated for development in national policy as an Eastern Seaboard Industrial P... more Map Ta Phut was designated for development in national policy as an Eastern Seaboard Industrial Port. It is located in Rayong Province with growing demand from Eastern Seaboard industries and is heavily affected by serious environmental problems as a "pollution control zone". While the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking, representing the national business sector, claimed that the area generated total revenues of 1.1 trillion baht per year, or 11% of Thailand's gross domestic product, and employed more than 100,000 workers, the declaration of the area as a pollution control zone severely limited investment and business operations. Thus, controversies arose among the investment business sectors, the residential sector (residents have been affected by a decrease in their quality of life and health) and environmental concern sectors. This paper aims to find an efficient and practical mitigation practice to balance the purposes of the industrial port with protection of surrounding communities and natural resources. The author will apply physical design and planning such as the application of "buffer zones", "greenbelts", "set-back", "green corridor", "green wall" and "protection strips" along with environmental measurements such as the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), which can be adapted for pollution protection as best practices of landscape architecture.

This is known as caused by the increase of carbon dioxide. To stop the increase, many countries agreed to the Paris Agreement in 2015. When to discuss the climate change, temperature drop and increase are focused more often. The big change of the temperature, especially the rise of the temperature, causes the more usage of air conditioning system, and it also causes more energy consumption. In addition, the usage of the air conditioning system is affected by both indoor and outdoor thermal environment. The temperature setting of air conditioning system tends to be lower in the countries situated in tropical region than the countries in the other region. This happens because the thermal sensation of human is easily affected by the outdoor environment. For that reason, to grasp the tendency of thermal sensation in outdoor space is important. In addition, the tendency of short time residence is necessary to wipe out the influence of the thermal environment adjustment by long time living. For that reason, this research targeted the thermal evaluation tendency of short time residents in Bangkok and carried out subject experiments in outdoor spaces to develop landscape design method. As the result of analysis, a different tendency was grasped at one of the measuring points with open sky.

Global climate change is considered as relating to the global warming and is becoming a serious problem. Global warming is related to the increase of carbon dioxide. The increase of the carbon dioxide is caused by the energy consumption increase. In addition, air conditioning dominates the large ratio of the energy consumption. Furthermore, according to the huge earthquake happened on March 11, 2011 in Japan, the country's energy policy is facing a turning point, which is to establish less harmful and less energy based society than ever. For that reason, to decrease the energy consumption, how to reduce the energy consumption by the airconditioning is an important issue. There have been several research relating to the topic. However, those researches did not study on the effect of the environment sound on the human thermal sensation. For that reason, the purpose of this research is to clarify the effect of environment sound on human thermal sensation. As the result of this study, the environment sounds, such as "Rain" "Stream" "Water Bamboo" showed the effect to lower the human thermal sensation.

As a starting point for behavioral body temperature regulation taken to improve from a poor thermal environment to a more pleasant environment, thermal sense of thermal environment stimulus is important. The poupose of this sutudy is to use the outdoor thermal environment evaluation index ETFe to quantify effects on thermal sensations of the human body of a tropical region climate with small annual temperature differences, and to examine seasonal differences in thermal sensation. It was found temperature preferences were lower in the winter season than in the dry season, and that a tolerance for higher temperatures in the dry season than in the winter season. It was found effects of seasonal differences of the thermal environment appear in quantitative changes in thermal sensations. It was found that effects of seasonal differences of the thermal environment do not greatly affect quantitative changes in thermal comfort.

It causes health injuries through the deterioration of the outdoor thermal condition. It is necessary to study how humans stay outdoors and adjust to thermal conditions. The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of the outdoor tropical urban thermal environment on a subject who has been acclimatized to the environment studied using the outdoor thermal environment evaluation index ETFe. In addition, the tendency of human impacts was clarified through comparison to subjects from a temperate thermal environment region. As a result, it was found that an ETFe of up to 35˚C could be recognized as a temperate thermal environment. However, when the ETFe was greater than 40˚C, the subject could not tolerate the environment. There was not a significant difference of psychological reaction between Thai people, who were acclimatized to the tropical climate, and Japanese people, who were acclimatized to the temperate climate.

In outdoor sunny environment, however, shaded areas occur even for the same site of the body, and a remarkable difference in skin temperature is considered to occur under the influence of the short-wavelength solar radiation. The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of the non-uniform and asymmetric thermal radiation of short-wavelength solar radiation in outdoor environment on the division of the body surface section and the calculation of the mean skin temperature. The skin temperature of the front of the coronal surface, which was facing the sun and where the body received direct short-wavelength solar radiation, and the skin temperature of the rear of the coronal surface, which was in the shadow and did not receive direct short-wavelength solar radiation were respectively measured. The feet, upper arm, forearm, hand and lower leg, which are susceptible to short-wavelength solar radiation in a standing posture, had a noticeable difference in skin temperature between sites in the sun and in shade. The mean skin temperature of sites facing the sun was significantly higher than the mean skin temperature of those in the shade.

The concept of WiMBY was formulated for a preference survey used to compare land utilization schemes for under-utilized plots. The survey aimed to determine respondents' attitudes towards the development schemes when compared to other similar sites at more distant sites to their home. The survey results showed that the patterns of preference comparisons across the respondents' location of the publicly owned land lie in the most valuable areas near the central business district of Bangkok, Thailand. The factors involved in decision-making were compared using a quantitative analysis tool to characterize the homogeneity/heterogeneity of the patterns of preferences. Ultimately, all three legs of the "land redevelopment tripod"-economic, social, and environmental-are necessary to keep land development balanced and sustainable. The greater consensus in decision-making can be achieved by considering this tripod.

The location is on a flood plain delta of the Chao Phraya River. It was originally selected with the consideration of being a natural defense against enemies, while providing a water-based settlement for the citizens. Under the democratic government for more than 75 years, the old settled communities in Bangkok have been in the area where the formal planning can not prohibit them from growing. This study will examine the opportunities and threats of the old communities in the conservation area of Bangkok. The essence of the communities has performed its roles in several ways, included being lifelong learning museums, a cozy home of the 'intangible cultural heritage', the unseen tourist attractions, and the public nostalgia space for people to remind their origin. Not always that the 'green' (park) is better than 'brown' (in this case is high-density housing). It demands talent from a diverse group of stakeholders that cuts across public, private and community sectors which entails delicate negotiations and pivotal compromises, social capital gains and creative tension. The root of the problem of redevelopment of the old communities requires compromise, negotiation, trade-off, win-winning, and all kinds of multi-actor involvement in the decision-making. Establishing public participation channels of from all potential stakeholders (both public and private agencies and citizens) may lag, especially those from 'the bottom of the pyramid' who have lived on the land for decades but have a very hoarse voices and difficult to be heard by the decision makers. The author will describe the history of an old community in Bangkok, known as 'Pom Mahakan Fort community' and review the literatures on the projects. The charming old communities must be conserved, rehabilitated, and revitalized instead of being flushing away by the new developments. 'Gentrification' maybe in needed but in the best way with less controversies. Finally, she will suggest the win-win strategy to rehabilitate the area from the case studies.

Most of them involved the diversity of needs and conflict directions of utilization. The problems of controversies in publicly owned land utilization is usually related to 'black box' 2 policy, inefficient decision-making, poor land management, poor coordination , ignorance of public land actors, politic, and market involvement (economic factors). The study focused on Thailand cases in these following issues; • The recent decision-making process in publicly own land. • Ad-hoc policy in public organizations and decision-making without the participation of all involved actors. • Publicly owned lands and potential alternatives of utilization. • Involved actors and their attitudes toward land utilization policies. Any publicly owned vacant land itself can be transformed into valuable public land, provides the equal opportunity of public services distributed through the districts. The surveys listed utilization examples and asked respondents to select the most preferred ones. The choices were referred to different directions to usually achieve the sustainable and sound urban land planning. The results from several analyses seemed to form major common patterns of directions and actors.

However, these universal standards are better suitedto large-scale than small-scale projects such as community renewable energy (CRE) projects. Methods used by CRE projects to achieve BMP status remain to be determined. This paper aims to present various aspects of BMPs for small-scale CRE projects by emphasizing practices that are unrestricted, simple, andadaptable to the surrounding environment, and that will eventually lead to sustainability in the commu-nity. The case study involves RE projects at the ‘Sathya Sai School Thailand,’ an education-based com-munity which has a community-like organizational management. The community implements CRE pro-jects for educational-awareness program and to serve their energy needs, starting with micro scale in the community which then will impact on the reduction of climate change crisis at glo...

The markets become center of trading goods, the public space for neighboring communities, lined up with homemade and 'slow' food restaurants, coffee shops, gift shops, photo studios and drug stores, where offering locals a wide range of activities and renowned for their traditional way of life. In the fast growing country like Thailand, mega trade has been introduced for convenient and faster urban life. International mega stores, super markets and convenient stores have moved to the cities threatening the local markets; some of them were demolished and replaced by mega stored and modern shopping malls. But "Market culture" is recently a new movement in some countries to tell the various tales of the past. It is also true that nowadays the visitors are looking for the taste and fragrance of coffee in classical style than Starbuck and want to stroll in the wooden architecture shop-house clusters with a bite of nostalgia rather than window-shop in a mega mall. Especially UNESCO has given an Award of Merit (an Award of Merit UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation) to Sam Chuk community and old market; the 100-yr old market town along the Thajeen River in Suphan Buri province, honoring its outstanding preservation of the century-old wooden architecture and the revitalization of the historic commercial hub. The market was originally established as a trading post for the central region of Thailand in 1894. This paper aims to explore the history of "market culture" and focus on the contradictions of 'the old markets' and 'the modern shopping stores' in Thailand. The author will review the successful cases of UNESCO award winning old market : Sam Chuk that the local people do not allow external pressures to damage their century-old heritage, the new design of Plearn Wan shopping complex with a dynamic and charming place to visit. In addition, the collapses of old canal-front markets when the coming of the highways. The cases of traditional groceries' extinction by the swallow of cross national convenient stores in every corner of the cities. Moreover, she will analyze the reasons behind the success is the effort to make a market as a living museum and a proudly presented cultural heritage site.

It locates in Rayong Province with the growing demand from Eastern Seaboard industries and heavily affected by serious environmental problems - as ‘pollution control zones’. While the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking, representing the national business sector claimed that the area generated total revenues of Bt1.1 trillion a year, or 11 per cent of Thailand’s gross domestic product, employing more than 100,000 workers, so the declaring the area a pollution control zone severely damaged investment and business operations. Thus, these are the controversial issues among the investment business sectors, the residents which have been affected on their quality of life and health, and environmental concern sectors.
This paper aims to find an efficient and practical mitigation to balance the purposes between industrial port and protection of surrounded communities and natural resources. The author will apply physical design and planning such as the applications of “buffer zone”, “green belt”, “set-back”, “green corridor”, “green wall”, “protection strip”, and combined with environmental measurements like Air Pollution Tolerance Index–APTI, which can be adapted for pollution protection as landscape architectural best practice.

The National Policies seem to support investment and regulate only to what extremely affect to environment. In some cases of declaring the pollution control zones, it is the end of the pipe solution. Many terms and solutions have been introduced from key actors such as the applications of “buffer zone”, “green belt”, “set-back”, “green corridor”, “green wall”, and “protection strip”, but the mitigations proceed tardily and the effects are unable to be cured promptly and even impossible to be cured.
This talk aims to find an efficient and practical mitigation to balance the purposes between industrial port and protection of surrounded communities and natural resources. The speaker will investigate the upstream source or the start of the pipe, then apply landscape indicator like Air Pollution Tolerance Index–APTI. The assumption is tolerance in plants : tolerant, intermediate, sensitive, and very sensitive , can be adapted for pollution protection as landscape architectural best practice.

The Bangpakong River Deltas is an important ecosystem landscape in the eastern region in Thailand which is the water source for fishery, aquaculture, agriculture irrigation, daily consumption, transportation, and the drainage channels. The objectives of the studies are to protect the values of the landscape in the four crucial areas: 1) Aquaculture areas, 2) Wetland agricultural areas, 3) Waterfront communities areas, and 4) Cultural heritage areas. The methodology of the project is mainly Geographic Information Systems (ESRI ArcGIS) to analyze the trends of urban and industrial expansion possibilities and applying Survey123 with satellite images and some information and opinions from the communities from site survey at the location. These studies found that the impact of urbanization and industrialization are caused by The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Development project evolving along the lines of the road and the construction of bridges across the rivers. Therefore, the landscape in the Bangpakong River Deltas will have a risk of being threatened, the impact of urban expansion and industrial development should be concerned and encouraged to mitigate the future impacts.
