By accessing six fictional videos on characters drawn from local history, users can also experience a historical overview, from the Longobard invasion up to the Unification of Italy, through the troubled periods of the Kingdom of Naples. The project works by open source software for video editing, GIS elaboration, and image processing. The legal situation is currently vague and not defined, as it is in other parts of Europe and the world. Two valid arguments are confronting each other: on the one hand, the public demand for data openness, on the other, the public institutions’ desire to earn money, at least enough to justify conservation expenses. After a discussion on the current situation, where digital revolution and 3D technology changed even the common understanding of ‘reproduction’ processes, a possible solution is presented, in order to satisfy both needs.

The Virtual Museum of the upper Calore Valley (http://osiris.itabc.cnr.it/vallecalore/), is an attempt to make converging these two applicative fields. Based on ATON, an open-source front-end developed by CNR ITABC, this web gis application allows users to discover old stories, characters and traditions of the Avellino countryside, in the south of Italy, while navigating the territory lively and dynamically.

Particularly in the cultural heritage domain, it has been unveiled the relevance of new AI-based approaches, able to dynamically aggregate information and making them available for a customized fruition aimed to the individual cultural growth. Here, we integrate machine learning techniques for the automatic generation of contents for an intelligent tutoring system grounded on automated planning techniques. We present a solution for semantic, intelligent creation of personalized cultural contents, born as a lesson-making assistant, but developed as to become a multi-function “cultural crossover”, useful in the frame of a wide range of planning, dissemination, and managing activities for cultural heritage contents.

By emphasizing the interactivity of the learning process, in particular, the recent Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) methodologies can represent an enabling factor for the construction of the common knowledge. This paper pursues the idea of integrating different heterogeneous artificial intelligence techniques for the personalized administration of stimuli in a dynamic learning environment. With this in mind, this paper describes a system, called WikiTEL and its first instantiation to Cultural Heritage visits in the Matera city.

This topic is addressed in different ways, but it is currently under discussion both in Europe and USA. Italy holds a particular position in this debate, due to its large concentration of ancient remains and the peculiar structure of its laws. The interesting experiments of total open access to Cultural Heritage reproduction on the one hand, and claims of the State Administration for control of Cultural Heritage exploitation and a consequent income (in any sense) on the other, are equally valid arguments. At the same time the blurred distinction between the concepts of ‘reconstruction’ and ‘reproduction’, of ‘personal’ and ‘commercial’ use, and the philosophical and mathematical difficulties in defining what is exactly a ‘copy’ in the digital context, make the matter harder. The paper aims to analyse this debate, and to make a contribution to a new meth...

After a general analysis and a narrative theory review, the first topic addressed is the long-lasting problem of harmonizing freedom of narration (human creativity) and the constraints of scientific reliability: a debate which is at least 150 years old, but become particularly important in the digital era. Then, it will be set a classification of storytelling elements (arena, characters) inspired on similar ones shaped in the domain of semantics for literature, in order to create a working tool suitable for virtual museums and historical dissemination in a broad sense.

The common theory on caravanserais state they were built at one-day march distance from each othe... more The common theory on caravanserais state they were built at one-day march distance from each other. Such a pattern may fit some situations, but it does not seem to be present in Syria during the Ayyubid (1174-1260 CE) and Mamluk periods (1260-1517 CE), when most of the region’s caravanserais were founded. Caravanserais built during these periods do not seem to follow a precise pattern of distribution along the communication axis of Syria and, as a result, the logic that underlines their distribution remains unclear. The authors face the problem through a GIS-based, network analysis approach that takes into account the building period of each structure and the one-dimensional criterion of distance to its nearest neighbour, also considered in relation to the closeness to urban centres. The results of the analysis are then compared to the historical Syrian caravan networks. The outcomes show interesting aspects both in terms of understanding the route organization and of predictive methods for focusing on areas where structures not yet located may be expected.

In this context an evocative virtual reality installation has been presented in the National Etruscan Museum in Rome, where we propose a multi-modal approach to the narration of the landscape considered in its several aspects: geological, natural, historical, archaeological, poetic, evocative and symbolic. Through gesture-based interaction the visitor explores the landscape experiencing four different scenarios, two of them related to aerial and underwater landscapes and two others related to specific archaeological sites. This paper will focus on the design of the installation and on the communicative approach followed, in particular, for the scenario of Lucus Feroniae. The methodological approach will be described, from digitization and 3D reconstruction of the site in Tiberian and Trajan ages up to the creation of innovative integration of different media.
