This study makes it possible to determine the origin of this fragment, which is included in the new critical edition by Claudio Lagomarsini, by sheding light on the circulation of the translation in the area of Eastern Tuscany, on the border with Umbria.

The episode narrates the massacre of Droin's sons committed by the evil fox Renart, and the subsequent revenge taken by Droin with the help of the hound Morhout. Despite its narratological importance, Droin's episode has not been adequately investigated by extant scholarship. My analysis focuses on the metatextual nature of the ambiguity and irony that char-acterise Renart's language. Indeed, although in his speech Renart gives several hints of the massacre that is going to take place, Droin is too naive to fully understand the fox's words. It is therefore my suggestion that the reader is the actual ideal interlocutor of the fox, as he is the only one able to get Renart's hidden intentions.
