50 years ago this week, Bryce Bayer (pronounced “BUY-er”) memorialized, in his Kodak laboratory notebook, the color pattern he had just invented. He wrote that “each of the red, green and blue records are sampled in regular arrays, with twice as many points for green, which is most important to sharpness.” Kodak’s patent on the Bayer color filter array (CFA), titled “Color imaging array”, was issued on July 20, 1976, and is now cited by over 900 other patents. See https://lnkd.in/gFVz4PKuI was very fortunate to work with Bryce, beginning on my first day at Kodak Research Labs in August 1980. At the time, Bryce was developing a noise reduction / sharpening algorithm for scanned film based on the Hadamard transform. I had used Hadamard transform-based image compression for my thesis on wireless image transmission, and we considered possible hardware implementations of his algorithms. In 2009, I was fortunate to locate and scan Bryce’s notebook, so that images of his most important contributions could be shown as he was honored with the Royal Photographic Society’s Progress Award. Today, almost all color videos and photos are created using the Bayer pattern CMOS image sensors found in smart phones, computers, camcorders, and drones. Over the last 50 years, many other CFA patterns have been invented by others, including myself, but the Bayer pattern has stood the test of time. Bryce was fortunate, however, to have the first pick of all possible patterns. Peter Dillon, who invented color image sensors, had asked Bryce what CFA pattern he should use on the world’s first color CCD. In response, Bryce created the now famous CFA pattern shown in the figure.
