Los marsupiales son mamíferos de la subclase Theria, infraclase Metatheria. Dentro de este grupo ... more Los marsupiales son mamíferos de la subclase Theria, infraclase Metatheria. Dentro de este grupo se incluyen algunas especies muy bien conocidas y carismáticas, como los canguros y koalas de Australia. Una de las particularidades de estos mamíferos es que las hembras poseen un marsupio o bolsa marsupial, que sirve para resguardar a las crías mientras estas completan su desarrollo. Sin embargo, esta estructura -que es muy evidente en algunas especies australianas- esta mayormente ausente en los marsupiales del nuevo mundo, en donde es reemplazada por ciertos pliegues de la piel. La anatomía reproductiva de las hembras también se caracteriza por la presencia de dos úteros y una vagina doble. El número de mamas varía entre especies y aún en una misma especie, con un rango entre 7 y 25. En los machos el pene es bífido, se ubica detrás del escroto y carece de hueso. Por regla general, los marsupiales invierten considerable mas tiempo en el periodo de lactación que en la gestación, en comparación con otros mamíferos.Fil: Teta, Pablo Vicente. Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance,... more Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean... more Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean species-level measures of traits while ignoring individual variance within species. However, there is a large amount of variation within species and it is increasingly apparent that it is important to consider trait variation not only between species, but also within species. Mammals are an interesting group for investigating trait-based approaches because they play diverse and important ecological functions (e.g., pollination, seed dispersal, predation, grazing) that are correlated with functional traits. Here we compile a data set comprising morphological and life history information of 279 mammal species from 39,850 individuals of 388 populations ranging from -5.83 to -29.75 decimal degrees of latitude and -34.82 to -56.73 decimal degrees of longitude in the Atlantic forest of South America. Paraguay is a small landlocked country whose mammalian fauna is among the least studied in South ... more Paraguay is a small landlocked country whose mammalian fauna is among the least studied in South America, as well as their parasites. As a result of a study of the effects of habitat fragmentation on small mammal biodiversity in eastern Paraguay, we have collected some parasites of cricetid rodents. Herein, we describe a new species of Litomosoides Chandler, 1931 parasitising the body cavity of the tuft-toed rice rat Sooretamys angouya (Fischer) and Litomosoides esslingeri Bain, Petit & Diagne, 1989 parasitising Oligoryzomys nigripes (Olfers), thus expanding its geographical distribution into Paraguay. Litomosoides ysoguazu n. sp. is characterised by the large size of the females (92.2-117.6 mm long) and by having buccal capsule with an anterior widening with rounded edges on the chitinous segment and a rounded widening at the base; male tail with a single pair of adcloacal papillae, three to five pairs of asymmetrical postcloacal papillae, and one or two unpaired papillae in the me...

ABSTRACT Se documenta de manera resumida la historia de la mastozoología paraguaya desde sus inic... more ABSTRACT Se documenta de manera resumida la historia de la mastozoología paraguaya desde sus inicios, con los misioneros jesuitas del siglo XVI, hasta la actualidad. En los últimos 20 años ha habido una explosión en el número de trabajos publicados y personas interesadas en la mastozoología paraguaya, lo cual ha incrementado el número de especies conocidas para el país de 167 en 1998, a por lo menos 177 en 2013. El inventario aún no termina, y conforme el conocimiento avance, la lista se incrementará. Por otra parte, con excepción de algunas especies emblemáticas como el jaguar (Panthera onca) y el taguá (Catagonus wagneri), poco se sabe sobre la ecología, evolución o historia natural de los mamíferos paraguayos. Actualmente, en Paraguay se está creando un marco institucional que permitirá la formación de los futuros mastozoólogos y gestores ambientales profesionales. A futuro, estos esfuerzos impulsarán el desarrollo de la disciplina mastozoológica en Paraguay y permitirá aumentar los esfuerzos de conservación de este grupo de organismos.
