Fundamental questions about the nature of architecture motivate much of contemporary philosophy o... more Fundamental questions about the nature of architecture motivate much of contemporary philosophy of architecture: what sort of enterprise architecture is; whether architecture has essential features; what kinds of things architecture makes— yielding the further issue as to whether architecture always, only sometimes, or never is an art form; what renders architecture distinct from other art forms; and whether architecture includes all built structures. What sort of divergence architecture could allow to contain. This paper investigates the concept and evaluation of the symbolic form of architecture. It first focuses on the philosophical foundations for this concept in the works of theoreticians and architects. Finally, a critical review of the participatory movement in architecture, art, and literature is presented as a movement diametric to the symbolic development in architecture, since it glorified the analogical, and frequently the mimetic. This paper also poses how architecture spread out more perplexing in meaning.
