YA books | [Sep. 15th, 2008|10:41 pm]Feminist and Gender Theory Reading List |

I'm working on a project for a young adult literature class about books featuring gay or lesbian teens. I've read Annie on My Mind and Am I Blue? and have gotten a list of many other books. So, any suggestions of YA books with gay characters you particularly like? I'm not sure what my smaller focus will be, so anything you suggest would be great.

Hi all,Does anyone have any good leads as to books to read if one were genderqueer in the FtM direction and considering hormonal/social transition? That is, books which focus on the changes that androgen administration causes? The one book I know of is The Testosterone Files.Thanks...

book review/rec | [Jan. 17th, 2006|10:50 am]Feminist and Gender Theory Reading List |

I just read a fairly interesting book that had a lot of discussion about the women's health moevemtn, thought you all might be interested: All in My Head, but Paula Kamen. It's a book about chronic daily headache and related neurological problems, specifically as experienced by women. Many chronic pain diseases (especially headache diseases) have historically been classified as "women's diseases" and thought of as histrionic or psychosomatic disorders; Kamen does a decent job of debunking outdated phsychology while telling her own story, but I did find the book to be a bit self-involved and dull at times. As a chronic migraine sufferer myself, however, I strongly empathized with many chapters, especially those chronicalling the distant and belittling experience of visiting (usually male) doctor after doctor. Overall, I'd recommend it, especially to anyone who works in any aspect of the health or mental health industry or has a chronic pain or chronic illness sufferer -- called the Tired Girls by Kamen -- in their life. Anyone else read anything lately?

transgender research | [Oct. 11th, 2005|11:50 pm]Feminist and Gender Theory Reading List |

I checked out a book from my college's library called Current Concepts in Transgender Identity, published in 1998. It contains research papers about transgender topics. The paper on the historical and mythological points was interesting, but the others... they seem to have this basic assumption that the natural, normal thing is to me M or F, gay or straight, one or the other, whereas I believe that if our society were more open, almost all people would recognize a little mixture in themselves. We wouldn't need to define everything, we could just me ourselves. One guy was came up with 46 ways to define different pairings of 2 people. Not only is that complicated, it leaves out groups of more than 2 people, like those who are polyamorous or people who choose to have 3 or more people in a relationship (like the man and 2 women who got a civil union in the Netherlands not too long ago). I was also annoyed that in tables listing who the different MTFs and FTMs were attracted to, transpeople weren't listed! I think they were listed as an option under "other" on another table. Besides that it was "straight men" and "gay women" etc. Plus, many of the authors seemed to assume that the data they had on transpeople represented all transpeople, even though so many people are't out, or aren't in research studies, or don't get surgery. Surgery was used a lot as a way to tell numbers of transpeople, and that's just inaccurate, esp if it's genital surgery only. So when one author said that he only knew one one or two cases of two transpeople being a couple, I thought, hmm maybe this guy should get an lj and join some communities! I've heard of a lot more than one case of that. There's just so much misinformation. But again, the historical stuff was good... apparently the first colonial governor of New York came over from England wearing woman's clothes and continued to wear them throughout his term in office. A lot of French guys doing that too. And gender changing in native tribes everywhere around the world. Again, if our culture was more open about it, it would be seen a lot more.

Mod announcement | [Oct. 11th, 2005|11:39 am]Feminist and Gender Theory Reading List |

Guys, I know this isn't the most active community, but it is NOT an advertisement community. Please do not advertise events, protests, petitions, etc here. Really, stop it. Just to remind everyone, this is a forum for the discussion and recommendation of books, articles, news stories, etc, about gender, gay rights, women's rights, the feminist movement... anything along those lines. As such... anyone read any good books lately? I'm going back a bit and reading Simone DeBeauvoir's The Second Sex -- I read parts of it when I was a high school freshman, but it was a bit much for me at the time. Hopefully I'll get more out of it this time around!

Methuen school faces parents' queries on student's gender issueOfficials back girl who seeks treatment as boyBy Tracy Jan, Globe Staff | March 5, 2005Dozens of parents flooded the Methuen school system with phone calls yesterday after a local newspaper reported that a fourth-grade girl had returned from the February school break requesting to be treated as a boy.The child's parents told school officials that he had always considered himself a boy, rejecting feminine dress and name, and they were agreeing to raise him as a male. The story has attracted the attention of local and national media, including a half-dozen television stations, according to Superintendent Phillip Littlefield, who spent most of yesterday fielding parent and media calls. Many parents sought reassurance that ''this wasn't just some frivolous happening with the youngster," Littlefield said. ''There is a medical condition that exists here, and this is not something irresponsible on the part of the parents. These are wonderful parents who care very, very deeply about their child."Most parents who called, however, simply wanted to know which bathroom the child uses, according to Littlefield, who said he told them the youngster uses a separate bathroom, and people say, ''Oh, wow, that's cool."( Read more...Collapse )

First off, thank you all for bearing with us so well while kneedeep and I try to figure out how the LJ-book club aspect of this community is going to work out. We've not been neglecting you all on purpose, promise! As for Genderqueer, lots of people seem to be reading it, or have read it, so I'd like to pose the first question: what was your favorite chapter/story, and why? That might help us guide discussion toward aspects we know you want to focus on.

I'm a slacker.... | [Mar. 2nd, 2005|12:36 pm]Feminist and Gender Theory Reading List |

[**mood** |motivated]So while ago I had the idea to have book discussions related to this community. Some of us came up with the idea to start with Genderqueer. Sorry folks, I kind of dropped the ball with that. If anyone read the book and would still like to discuss it, comment here and I can formulate some questions. I since have started reading Female Masculinity and The Last Time I Wore a Dress. Is anyone interested in reading and discussing these? I promise to have more follow through now that my schedule is less busy.
