The book provides the reflections of modern semioticians, as well as those of representatives fro... more The book provides the reflections of modern semioticians, as well as those of representatives from related disciplines (linguistics, anthropology, philosophy), within the framework of the international online Forum «Responding to Major Challenges: Semiotics in Dialogue with the Humanities» and a round table «New normality, new life forms: semiotics and pandemic» (23.01.2021, Moscow) under the auspices of the International Association for Semiotic Studies and in collaboration with the Center for Franco-Russian Studies.
The Forum was organized by the International Center for Semiotics and Intercultural Dialogue of the State Academic University for the Humanities in Moscow. During the first and second waves of the pandemic, scientists from 12 countries (Russia, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, China, Lithuania, Iran, Argentina, Colombia, Azerbaijan, Australia) attempted to give a conceptual and philosophical interpretation of the ongoing sanitary crisis and its impact on our lives. This book summarizes the discussions.
The original texts have been translated into Russian for the first time in order to raise awareness of the achievements of global semiotic science in recent years among the Russian-speaking readership, students of GAUGN and the younger generation of Russian academics working in the field of humanities.

Questo volume di semiotica delle culture vuole invece cogliere la soggettività delle isole e di chi le popola. Per farlo tesse connessioni fra mito e storia, utopia e distopia, metafora e modelli, immaginario e teoria; fra semiotica, nissologia, antropologia, filosofia, mediologia, studi culturali.
Parlare d’isolanità significa dunque contribuire ad emancipare lo studio delle isole da una concezione riduttivistica, facendo vedere tutta l’arcipelagica ricchezza di relazioni e identificazioni che queste custodiscono nella loro storia, nel loro presente, nelle loro aspirazioni.

Saying "island" seems to imply a sense of closure, objectification, naturalness, synthesized by the concept of insularity.
This volume of semiotics of cultures, on the other hand, seeks to capture the subjectivity of islands and of those who populate them. To do this, the volume weaves connections between myth and history, utopia and dystopia, metaphor and models, imagination and theory; between semiotics, nissology, anthropology, philosophy, mediology, cultural studies.
Speaking of islandness therefore means contributing to emancipating the study of islands from a reductivistic conception, showing all the archipelagic richness of relationships and identifications that they preserve in their history, in their present, in their aspirations.

Как осмыслить риски в области прогресса с позиций семиотики культуры? В статье мы предлагаем семиотический подход к этике отношений между человеком и продуктами искусственного интеллекта в литературном контексте. Литературная антиутопия начала XXI века строится по принципу «щупать будущее» (Шкловский) и одновременно «приглядываться к аналогичным событиям в прошлом» (Лотман). С точки зрения семиотики человек в антиутопии -это образ «мыслящего тростника»: способность к инновациям является его эволюционным преимуществом. Мысль человека сопоставима с геологической силой, и в этом смысле подход Юрия Лотмана продолжает интеллектуальную традицию Владимира Вернадского, от биосферы к семиосфере. Современные антиутопии Кадзуо Исигуро показывают нам общество будущего с разделением человеческих коллективов на «резервные» и «легитимные». Клонов и роботов предлагается рассматривать не как бездушные устройства, но как художественные произведения. Тексты антиутопий -основа для размышлений об этическом поведении человека будущего.

Our article is devoted to the semiotic analysis of the short story The First Teacher by the Kyrgy... more Our article is devoted to the semiotic analysis of the short story The First Teacher by the Kyrgyz writer, public figure and diplomat Chingiz Aitmatov. The history of a rural school teacher in the twenties of the last century is both a love story and a history of culture and traditions of one of the republics of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan.
Written in 1961, the story became widely known after a cinematic adaptation by Russian director Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky in 1965. Konchalovsky's diploma work at the VGIK Institute of Cinematography in Moscow received awards at numerous international film festivals. According to the director, in the process of filming he was inspired by the mise-en-scenes of feature films by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa: “the idea was to imagine how Kurosawa could make The First Teacher, to make such a polyphonic overlay of two director's visions” (Konchalovsky, 2021).
The purpose of our analysis is to show how the process of intersemiotic translation of a written text into a visual image takes place through special montage techniques, tropes and symbols. Can we consider Konchalovsky's film as “Happy Babel”, in the words of Paolo Fabbri, where the rejection of the original verbal basis turns into a creative and unpredictable transformation of meaning (Lotman, 1992)?
In the course of the analysis, we rely on the work of Yuri Lotman in the field of semiotics of culture as well as on the research of contemporary European semioticians. The analysis also uses fragments of interviews with Andrei Konchalovsky and Chingiz Aitmatov from a documentary film by Marina Merkoulova and Alexei Kolesnikov Andrei Konchalovsky. I consider myself promising (2007).

The founder of the modern theater of the 20th century, Konstantin Stanislavsky, and his student E... more The founder of the modern theater of the 20th century, Konstantin Stanislavsky, and his student Evgeny Vakhtangov, in rehearsals and in performances, implemented the principle: "as in life". They believed that an actor should be on stage like a child. The latter, dropping the doll, may treat it like a wounded soldier and bandage it quite seriously. So, the actor must relate to untruth (the space of the stage). He must treat this "as if it were truth, that is, turn lies into truth" (VAKHTANGOV, 1918). We propose to consider examples of "truth theater" (school of experiencing, school of representation) through semiotic categories (veridictory modalities, engagement/disengagement), as well as through the prism of Lotman's semiotics of culture, and also ask the question what the truth on the theater stage is today.

O texto de Dante esteve no centro das atenções do fundador da escola semiótica de Tartu-Moscou, Iúri Mikháilovitch Lótman, que dedicou a ele um dos capítulos do livro Dentro dos mundos pensantes. Lótman analisa a estrutura de A divina comédia antes de tudo como espaço simbólico em que Natureza e Universo são textos semióticos, cujos sentidos podem ser decifrados. Toda a obra de Dante está organizada ao redor do eixo semântico “Alto-Baixo”, e o movimento do autor no texto é sempre de descida ou subida. A análise de Lótman é feita no contexto das conquistas da semiótica europeia do final do século XX e início do século XXI, isto é, a orientação “Semiótica das paixões” de Greimas e Fontanillee a “semiótica do corpo” de Castellana.

The article will focus on our personal experience in Russian translation of the reference book by... more The article will focus on our personal experience in Russian translation of the reference book by French semioticians Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille on the semiotics of passions. In particular, possible translative variations of terms relating to passions such as ‘umbrage’ with no exact analogue in Russian have been discussed with one of the authors, Jacques Fontanille. According to Umberto Eco, for a theory of translation, not only may it be necessary to examine many examples of translation, but also to have had at least one of the following three experiences: in checking translations by others, in translating, and in being translated - or better still, in being translated in collaboration with one’s translator. In the article, semiotics as a science is presented in its connection with history: we consider t... more In the article, semiotics as a science is presented in its connection with history: we consider the concept of Commemorations observed by UNESCO, the moment of unpredictability and the phenomenon that Yuri Lotman called “the retrospective view of the historian”. The twenties of the 21st century have become an era of unpredictable health crisis that semioticians continue to analyze. For example, at recent major international online conferences and forums on semiotics: in Russia (Moscow, GAUGN), France (Paris and Nîmes), Italy (Bologna), Poland (Warsaw) and Colombia (Bogota). The period of the pandemic has challenged representatives of the humanities, in particular semioticians, to comprehend what was happening and describe a number of emerging realities: home confinement, online communication, new cultural norms. In this sense, semiotics has proved to be a “useful toolbox” of the humanities and social sciences in response to the great challenges of our time.

O artigo propõe uma análise do espaço em A divina comédia, de Dante, do ponto de vista da semióti... more O artigo propõe uma análise do espaço em A divina comédia, de Dante, do ponto de vista da semiótica da cultura. O texto de Dante esteve no centro das atenções do fundador da escola semiótica de Tartu-Moscou, Iúri Mikháilovitch Lótman, que dedicou a ele um dos capítulos do livro Dentro dos mundos pensantes. Lótman analisa a estrutura de A divina comédia antes de tudo como espaço simbólico em que Natureza e Universo são textos semióticos, cujos sentidos podem ser decifrados. Toda a obra de Dante está organizada ao redor do eixo semântico “Alto-Baixo”, e o movimento do autor no texto é sempre de descida ou subida. A análise de Lótman é feita no contexto das conquistas da semiótica europeia do final do século XX e início do século XXI, isto é, a orientação “Semiótica das paixões” de Greimas e Fontanillee a “semiótica do corpo” de Castellana.

The book provides the reflections of modern semioticians, as well as those of representatives fro... more The book provides the reflections of modern semioticians, as well as those of representatives from related disciplines (linguistics, anthropology, philosophy), within the framework of the international online Forum «Responding to Major Challenges: Semiotics in Dialogue with the Humanities» and a round table «New normality, new life forms: semiotics and pandemic» (23.01.2021, Moscow) under the auspices of the International Association for Semiotic Studies and in collaboration with the Center for Franco-Russian Studies. The Forum was organized by the International Center for Semiotics and Intercultural Dialogue of the State Academic University for the Humanities in Moscow. During the first and second waves of the pandemic, scientists from 12 countries (Russia, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, China, Lithuania, Iran, Argentina, Colombia, Azerbaijan, Australia) attempted to give a conceptual and philosophical interpretation of the ongoing sanitary crisis and its impact on our lives. This book summarizes the discussions. The original texts have been translated into Russian for the first time in order to raise awareness of the achievements of global semiotic science in recent years among the Russian-speaking readership, students of GAUGN and the younger generation of Russian academics working in the field of humanities. In particular, possible translative variations of terms relating to passions such as ‘umbrage’ with no exact analogue in Russian have been discussed with one of the authors, Jacques Fontanille. According to Umberto Eco, for a theory of translation, not only may it be necessary to examine many examples of translation, but also to have had at least one of the following three experiences: in checking translations by others, in translating, and in being translated - or better still, in being translated in collaboration with one’s translator. In the article, semiotics as a science is presented in its connection with history: we consider t... more In the article, semiotics as a science is presented in its connection with history: we consider the concept of Commemorations observed by UNESCO, the moment of unpredictability and the phenomenon that Yuri Lotman called “the retrospective view of the historian”. The twenties of the 21st century have become an era of unpredictable health crisis that semioticians continue to analyze. For example, at recent major international online conferences and forums on semiotics: in Russia (Moscow, GAUGN), France (Paris and Nîmes), Italy (Bologna), Poland (Warsaw) and Colombia (Bogota). The period of the pandemic has challenged representatives of the humanities, in particular semioticians, to comprehend what was happening and describe a number of emerging realities: home confinement, online communication, new cultural norms. In this sense, semiotics has proved to be a “useful toolbox” of the humanities and social sciences in response to the great challenges of our time.
