Amaç Sigara içmenin işitme üzerindeki potansiyel etkisine ilişkin önceki çalışmalarda çelişkili s... more Amaç Sigara içmenin işitme üzerindeki potansiyel etkisine ilişkin önceki çalışmalarda çelişkili sonuçlar elde edilmiştir. Çelişkili sonuçların bir nedeni olarak genişletilmiş yüksek frekanslı işitme eşiklerini değerlendiren çalışma sayısının sınırlı olması gösterilebilir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma, genişletilmiş yüksek frekanslı işitme eşikleri kullanarak sigara içmenin işitme üzerindeki potansiyel etkisini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem Bu çalışmaya 20-30 yaşları arasında normal işiten (0.125-8 kHz işitme eşiği ≤ 15 dB HL) toplam 80 katılımcı dahil edildi. Tüm katılımcıların her iki kulağındaki genişletilmiş yüksek frekanslı işitme eşikleri 9-20 kHz aralığında değerlendirildi. Sigara içenlerin sigara tüketimi Brinkman indeksine göre belirlendi. Bulgular Saf ses işitme eşikleri açısından çalışma ve kontrol grupları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark elde edilmiştir. Bu fark sağ kulakta 9 kHz, sol kulakta 10 kHz'den sonra istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde artmaya başlamıştır. Ayrıca, Brinkman İndeksi ile genişletilmiş yüksek frekans işitme eşikleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksek derecede pozitif bir korelasyon elde edilmiştir. Sonuç Sonuçlar sigara içmenin işitme üzerinde, özellikle yüksek frekanslı işitme eşikleri üzerinde potansiyel bir etkisi olduğunu düşündürmektedir. Ayrıca bu çalışma sigara kullanımı durumunda saf ses işitme eşiklerinin hangi frekanstan itibaren etkilendiğini gösteren ilk çalışmadır. Klinisyenler, işitmeyi etkileyebilecek olası durumları gözden kaçırmamak için rutin odyolojik değerlendirmede kullanılan frekans aralığı ile sınırlı kalmayıp genişletilmiş yüksek frekans işitme eşiklerini ihmal etmemelidir.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı yetişkin işitme tarama testlerinde kullanılmak üzere hızlı ve pratik bi... more Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı yetişkin işitme tarama testlerinde kullanılmak üzere hızlı ve pratik bir Türkçe Gürültüde Konuşmayı Anlama Testi (GKAT) geliştirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: GKAT, sabit sinyal gürültü oranlarında fonetik dengeli 25 adet tek heceli kelimenin çoklu konuşmacı gürültüsü içerisine eklenmesiyle oluşturulmuştur. Sinyal 70 dB ses basınç seviyesinde sabit olup, gürültü şiddeti değiştirilerek 6 farklı Sinyal gürültü oranı (SGO) oluşturulmuştur: +10 dB, +6 dB, +3 dB, 0 dB,-3 dB,-6 dB. 20-60 yaş arasındaki 106 birey çalışmamıza dahil edilmiştir. Bulgular: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-60 yaş gruplarının +10, +6, +3, 0,-3,-6 SGO oranlarında GKAT ortalama değerleri oluşturulmuştur. Yaş grupları içerisinde SGO değişimine göre GKAT skorlarının değişimi değerlendirilmiş, tüm yaş gruplarında sinyal gürültü oranının azalması ile konuşmayı ayırt etme skorlarındaki düşüş istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.01). Sonuç: Yetişkin işitme taramalarında kullanılmak üzere, günlük hayattaki işitsel performansı yansıtacak şekilde oluşturulan Türkçe Gürültüde Konuşmayı Anlama Testi alana sunulmuştur.

Objectives: Generally, newborns have been tested according to the method recommended by the Joint... more Objectives: Generally, newborns have been tested according to the method recommended by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing all around the world: a two-stage automated transient evoked oto-acoustic emissions (ATEOAE) program, completed by an automatedauditorybrainstemresponse (AABR) for the positive diagnosis of hearingimpairment.However,there are still some controversies on this two-stage method. In this study, we used ATEOAE and AABR in combination as an initial stage screening protocol to investigate if we could reduce the disadvantages of routinely performed screening procedure. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,978 neonates were screened for hearing impairment during the study period prospectively. 1,917 of them were tested with both ATEOAE and AABR in the first day of their life. Materials and Methods: 36 individuals, (21 F and 15 M) were included in the study. The participants were evaluated in three groups: two study groups consisting of individuals suffering from tinnitus with mild hearing loss and individuals suffering from tinnitus without hearing loss; and a control group consisting of individuals with normal hearing without tinnitus. After audiologic evaluations, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory were carried out and the listening effort was assessed using the dual task paradigm. Speech in noise test at +10 dB Signal to Noise Ratio (primary task) and saccadic eye movement test (secondary task) were performed separately and simultaneously. Results: In the presence of tinnitus and mild hearing loss group, the increase in listening effort was found to be statistically significant from tinnitus and normal hearing individuals (p = 0.00) and the control group (p = 0.00). The rate of change within the listening effort of individuals with and without tinnitus was not found to be statistically significant (p>0.05). The increase in listening effort of individuals who had complaints of tinnitus for 5 years or more was found to be statistically significantly higher than those who complained less than 5 years (p = 0.002). Conclusion: A statistically significant increase within the listening effort in individuals with tinnitus who had a hearing loss at mild level and who had a tinnitus complaint over five years, was determined.

Acromegaly&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;am... more Acromegaly&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s effect on voice is still indefinite. We aimed to define acoustic characteristics of patients with acromegaly. Cross-sectional case-control study was designed. Thirty-seven patients with acromegaly and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Fundamental frequency (F0) and measurements related to frequency, amplitude, noise and tremor of the obtained voice sample were analyzed using Multi-Dimensional Voice Program. Absolute jitter (Jita) and jitter percent (Jitt), shimmer in decibel and shimmer percent, noise to harmonic ratio and soft phonation index, fundamental frequency tremor frequency and frequency tremor intensity index represented the parameters related to frequency, amplitude, noise and tremor of the voice sample, respectively. Patients with acromegaly, especially the uncontrolled patients, exhibited significant differences in frequency perturbation measurements. Jitt of all patients and Jita of uncontrolled patients were significantly higher than that of control group (p = 0.044 and p = 0.043, respectively). Jitter which is a measure of frequency perturbation can be assumed as an indicator of hoarse and deepened voice. Jita of all patients and Jitt of uncontrolled patients were elevated, but not reaching a statistical significance. Controlled and active patients had similar analysis of acoustic parameters. In the correlation analysis, shimmer and IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor 1) was found to be positively correlated in all patients with acromegaly and in female patients. When the p value is adjusted according to Bonferroni correction regarding the use of ten parameters for acoustic analysis (so adjusted p is &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;0.005), all the statistically significant findings become insignificant. Considering the parameters test different properties of voice, it is reasonable to pay attention to the findings. Patients with acromegaly have increased frequency perturbations measures, but this increase is non-significant according to Bonferroni correction. This may be perceptually sensed as hoarse voice. Amplitude perturbations within the voice of the patients with acromegaly are positively correlated with IGF-1 levels, this correlation is also non-significant according to Bonferroni correction.

Introduction: Keeping balance of the upright stance is a highly practiced daily task for healthy ... more Introduction: Keeping balance of the upright stance is a highly practiced daily task for healthy adults and is effectively performed without overt attentional control in most. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of concurrent cognitive tasks on postural sway in healthy participants. Methods: This was a prospective study. 20 healthy volunteer subjects were included. The cognitive and balance tasks were performed separately and then, concurrently. Postural control task consisted of 6 conditions (C) of the Sensory Organization Test. The cognitive task consisted of digit rehearsal task of varying presentation and varying levels of difficulty. Results: A statistically significant difference was noted between dual task and no task for C1, C2, C3 and C4 Sensory Organization Test scores (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between dual task versus non-task for C5, C6 and combined Sensory Organization Test scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion: During dual task, increase has been determined in postural sway for C1, C2, C3 and C4 for all presentation modes and difficulty levels of the cognitive tasks.

CRTT is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the auditory processing abilities. Gerec ve Yontem: Bu calismaya Hacettepe Universitesi Tip Fakultesi Kulak Burun Bogaz Anabilim Dali Odyoloji ve Konusma Bozukluklari Unitesinde isitme taramasi yapilan ve 0-28 hafta arasi 245 kulak sag ve sol olarak ayni gun degerlendirmeye alindi. The aim of this preliminary study is to determine the effect of chronic subjective tinnitus on li... more The aim of this preliminary study is to determine the effect of chronic subjective tinnitus on listening effort. Materials and Methods: 36 individuals, (21 F and 15 M) were included in the study. The participants were evaluated in three groups: two study groups consisting of individuals suffering from tinnitus with mild hearing loss and individuals suffering from tinnitus without hearing loss; and a control group consisting of individuals with normal hearing without tinnitus. After audiologic evaluations, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory were carried out and the listening effort was assessed using the dual task paradigm. Speech in noise test at +10 dB Signal to Noise Ratio (primary task) and saccadic eye movement test (secondary task) were performed separately and simultaneously. Results: In the presence of tinnitus and mild hearing loss group, the increase in listening effort was found to be statistically significant from tinnitus and normal hearing individuals (p = 0.00) and the control group (p = 0.00). The rate of change within the listening effort of individuals with and without tinnitus was not found to be statistically significant (p>0.05). The increase in listening effort of individuals who had complaints of tinnitus for 5 years or more was found to be statistically significantly higher than those who complained less than 5 years (p = 0.002). Conclusion: A statistically significant increase within the listening effort in individuals with tinnitus who had a hearing loss at mild level and who had a tinnitus complaint over five years, was determined.

We aimed to define acoustic characteristics of patients with acromegaly. Cross-sectional case-control study was designed. Thirty-seven patients with acromegaly and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Fundamental frequency (F0) and measurements related to frequency, amplitude, noise and tremor of the obtained voice sample were analyzed using Multi-Dimensional Voice Program. Absolute jitter (Jita) and jitter percent (Jitt), shimmer in decibel and shimmer percent, noise to harmonic ratio and soft phonation index, fundamental frequency tremor frequency and frequency tremor intensity index represented the parameters related to frequency, amplitude, noise and tremor of the voice sample, respectively. Patients with acromegaly, especially the uncontrolled patients, exhibited significant differences in frequency perturbation measurements. Jitt of all patients and Jita of uncontrolled patients were significantly higher than that of control group (p = 0.044 and p = 0.043, respectively). Jitter which is a measure of frequency perturbation can be assumed as an indicator of hoarse and deepened voice. Jita of all patients and Jitt of uncontrolled patients were elevated, but not reaching a statistical significance. Controlled and active patients had similar analysis of acoustic parameters. In the correlation analysis, shimmer and IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor 1) was found to be positively correlated in all patients with acromegaly and in female patients. When the p value is adjusted according to Bonferroni correction regarding the use of ten parameters for acoustic analysis (so adjusted p is &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;0.005), all the statistically significant findings become insignificant. Considering the parameters test different properties of voice, it is reasonable to pay attention to the findings. Patients with acromegaly have increased frequency perturbations measures, but this increase is non-significant according to Bonferroni correction. This may be perceptually sensed as hoarse voice. Amplitude perturbations within the voice of the patients with acromegaly are positively correlated with IGF-1 levels, this correlation is also non-significant according to Bonferroni correction.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of concurrent cognitive tasks on postural sway in healthy participants. Methods: This was a prospective study. 20 healthy volunteer subjects were included. The cognitive and balance tasks were performed separately and then, concurrently. Postural control task consisted of 6 conditions (C) of the Sensory Organization Test. The cognitive task consisted of digit rehearsal task of varying presentation and varying levels of difficulty. Results: A statistically significant difference was noted between dual task and no task for C1, C2, C3 and C4 Sensory Organization Test scores (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between dual task versus non-task for C5, C6 and combined Sensory Organization Test scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion: During dual task, increase has been determined in postural sway for C1, C2, C3 and C4 for all presentation modes and difficulty levels of the cognitive tasks.
