It suggests that in the heart of things there is an entrapment-the original meaning of "scandal" is that of a mechanism of entrapment. In this book, I make the claim that time, alluded here by various parts of a clock lying next to the open heart, is this scandal. The inscription over the engraving reads INTIMA PANDIT, which in one translation can be rendered as "the innermost opens up. " In due time, time-this "innermost intimacy"-reveals itself. Ethics is perhaps nothing else than this selfrevelation of time in time. JPM

This last issue is appended with a discussion of primacy within the Orthodox Church and a reading of the key ecumenical document of the Second Vatican Council (Unitatis Redintegratio).

Through a series of phenomenological analyses of key eschatological concepts and detailed readings in some of the key figures of both disciplines, this text reveals that phenomenology and eschatology cannot be fully understood without each other: without eschatology, phenomenology would not have developed the ethical and futural aspects that characterize it today; without phenomenology, eschatology would remain relegated to the sidelines of serious theological discourse. Along the way, such diverse themes as time, death, parousia, and the call are re-examined and redefined.

I was reminded of this question while reading Prof. Brian Becker's paper "Flight from the Flesh" as he attempts to translate Freud's topological tripartion of the soul into Marion's phenomenology. Becker's paper establishes an analogy of sorts between the id and the flesh, the body as idol and the ego, while, in conclusion, speculates that the third saturated phenomenon, the icon, could correspond to the super ego. Yet, the fourth saturated phenomenon, the event, remains unaccounted in this conceptual correspondence.

If by speaking we enter the double realm of the symbolic and the imaginary-both in significant ways constitutive of the narcissistic self-by eating, in recognizing the hunger that motivates eating, we recognize the Other. I have structured my paper into three parts: i) on the symbolic, as it is language that mediates the distance between an inside and an outside as well as the division within the subject itself; ii) the imaginary (where the narcissistic self belong); and iii) the conversion of the flesh.

The present conference touches what, in my view at least, is the central nerve of the critical work of this Academy; the core out of which all of its other concerns and preoccupations spring like branches from a common trunk. It is, therefore, an excellent opportunity, the one with which we are presented here, to raise some points in need for clarification by someone who has followed, even though from a distance, the work of this Academy and its team in hopes that these points would prove relevant to our work here and fruitful for our discussion.

Jean-Luc Marion, one of France's leading philosophers, has produced a multi-stranded body of work... more Jean-Luc Marion, one of France's leading philosophers, has produced a multi-stranded body of works consisting of two philosophical trilogies, one on Cartesian philosophy (Descartes' Gray Ontology; Descartes' Blank Theology; and On Descartes' Metaphysical Prism) and one on phenomenology (Reduction and Givenness; Being Given; and In Excess), as well as what might be called a theological trilogy (consisting of The Idol and Distance; God Without Being; and Prolegomena to Charity). Of course, such categorization is schematic and it fails to take into account a number of Marion's other works (such as his most original work, The Erotic Phenomenon). Through this incomplete catalogue one might indeed be able to discern an overarching idea that unifies Marion's work. Marion's phenomenology discusses the revelation of phenomena, while his theological essays are concerned with the phenomenon of revelation. The revelation of phenomena invokes the possibility of a phenomenon to appear. The phenomenon of revelation, on the other hand, refers to the historical and thus actual phenomenon of Christian and Christic revelation. It immediately becomes evident that the latter needs and presupposes the former; the Christian revelation, to the extent that it is a revelation, is actualized only through the possibility offered by phenomenality and it is, therefore, a revelation to the second degree.

For example, see Lash's essay on the post-council ecclesiological debates on "subsistit in" over "ist" in Roman Catholic ecclesiology. The conciliar decision to substitute "subsistit in" for "ist" was, most expert interpreters hold, an effort to provide a less restrictive Catholic understanding of church. It was not, as some interpreters now hold, to provide an even more restrictive Catholic ecclesiology than before the council.

This story has a peculiarity that immediately calls for our attention. It alone, from all the stories and parables told by Christ, names one of the characters. We know the story of the prodigal son, but we are not told his name; we do remember the parable of the Good Samaritan but not how he was called; neither the faithful nor the unforgiving servant have names; neither the arrogant Pharisee nor the humble Publican-in short, any person that appears in the Lord's parables is left unnamed except one: Lazarus. If this story makes such an exception it must be for a reason, it must be because this name, "Lazarus", has some significance.

As he approached the town gate, a dead man was being carried out-the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!" The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. -Luke 7:10-15

Panteleimon Manoussakis "Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town." (Mt. 9:1) This is, indeed, my dear brothers and sisters, a puzzling reference, for which city or town could be considered "His own" when only a few verses earlier He himself said that "foxes have dens, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head" (Mt. 8:20)? So, He comes "to his own town," yet, we are reminded by the Prologue of the Gospel of St John that "he came to that which was his own, but his own did not received him" (Jn.

They were casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen. 19 "Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fishers of people!" 20 So at once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there he saw two other brothers-James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. To take just three quite diff erent examples: we remember Aristotle's consideration in the Metaphysics of a divine being, the theion, as "the fi rst and most fundamental principle," Hegel's quest in his Science of Logic (1831) to give an exposition of God "as he is in his eternal essence before the creation of nature and a fi nite mind," 1 and the work of contemporary analytic philosophers, for some of whom the philosophy of religion is mostly applied metaphysics. Th e sense and function of "metaphysics" is not the same in each of these instances. Aristotle took himself to be studying being qua being; Hegel maintained that logic (as a speculative, dialectical science) "coincides with Metaphysics, the science of things set and held in thoughts"; 2 and analytic philosophy, beginning with Peter Strawson, has largely prized descriptive metaphysics over revisionary metaphysics and has therefore mostly confi ned itself to the critical inspection of grand theories of reality rather than the task of devising new and better ones.

Βλαδιμήρου με θέμα «Primacy and Synodality from an Orthodox Perspective».

Είναι ο Αρχιμανδρίτης Παντελεήμων Μανουσάκης, Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής Φιλοσοφίας στο College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, USA.

Tracing this theological constitution of consciousness allows us, I would like to suggest, to effect a paradigm shift in the field of the phenomenology of religion.

Th e article raises the question of the connection between ethics and time, and it argues that ethical categories are really temporal ones, so much so that it would make little sense to posit a choice between good and evil as if there were two simultaneous options. Instead, the story of Oedipus shows us how Th ebes is always to precede if one is to reach Colonus, that evil precedes and enables the good.

This seemingly trivial question has become a decisive and controversial topic in the formation of two distinct theological aesthetics: one influenced by Augustine in the West and another that finds its culmination with Gregory Palamas in the East. The aim of this article is to reconcile the polemical interpretations of Old Testament theophanies by employing a Christological understanding of aesthetics as developed by Hans Urs von Balthasar (in his Herrlichkeit) and a more nuanced understanding of signification as developed by Husserl and Merleau‐Ponty under the concept of indication.
