There is a paucity of resistance outcome data from non-B HIV subtypes circulating across West Africa.AimWe aimed to characterise the mutational profiles of HIV-positive patients from a small North-East Nigeria cohort, failing a DTG-based ART regimen.MethodsPlasma samples were collected and stored from 61 HIV-1 infected participants. Following failure of DTG-based ART, all samples were sequenced by Illumina whole-genome, ultra-deep sequencing. Sequencing was successful in (n=33) participants with median age of 40 years and median time on ART of 9 years. HIV-1 subtyping was performed using SNAPPy. Haplotype reconstruction and transmission were inferred using standa...

The linear longitudinal dynamic model is created with uncertainties in the state and input matrix. The controller structure aims to handle these uncertainties and also maintains the desired distance with the lead vehicle. To evaluate the performance of the proposed controller, several simulation studies are conducted by comparing the results with a linear state feedback controller via MATLAB/Simulink. Whereas the linear controller underperforms under uncertain conditions, it is seen that MRAC achieves the desired performance despite model uncertainties.

In the coming years, potato production must keep pace with global population expansion nutritiously and sustainably which can partially be achieved by reducing the yield losses caused by the destructive pest and disease activities to the crop. The challenge of 70–80% total microbial crop yield loss posed by pathogens must be addressed for sustainable potato production in order to properly alleviate the global starvation problem. Potato as a food security crop can help to achieve the four food security requirements: food availability, quality, accessibility and stability. Health benefits of potato have shown the presence of phytochemicals as well as resistant starch which serve as anticancer and antidiabetic. The role of potato in the global food security should not be over emphasized, hence in this chapter we...

By restricting the search to academic articles only, papers comprising of journal papers and conference proceedings were reviewed. For each paper, three information were sought which includes; robotics education, 3D printing, and finally how these two have been used together. We expect that the result of this review will serve as a pivot for schools at all levels to combine both subject areas and include the union into their STEM curricula which is believed to improve robotics education. The review shows that both tertiary and lower educational levels of robotics education benefit immensely from 3D printing. We also find out that most of the contributions of 3D printing to robotics education comes more in the form of using already printed parts rather than using the 3D printer itself. The challenges and trends are highlighted and future research directions have been suggested in this paper.

Ecotourism is an approach that should be environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. ... more Ecotourism is an approach that should be environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. For this reason, monitoring and evaluating the ecotourism destination is very important. A good practice is using an indicator system for planning and applying ecotourism models that emphasis on the sustainability approach. Ranking and prioritising of sustainabilitycriteria and indicators facilitates evaluating the situation of the destination by managers. The purpose of this study was to prioritizing and ranking the sustainability criteria and indicators for monitoring and assessment of ecotourism management in Penang National Park, Malaysia. A Fuzzy Analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) was used for prioritizing 9 criteria and 21 indicators from four dimensions of 'ecological', 'social', 'economic' and 'institutional' which obtained from a modified Delphi survey. Five experts from academic and non-academics had provided their judgment for the prioritizing process.Ecological dimension had the highest priority and institutional dimension had the least priority. Conservation of biodiversity, community economic improvement and visitor safety had the highest priorityin the ecological, economic and social dimensions respectively. Prioritised criteria and indicator in this study can help managers and stakeholders in monitoring decision making of different sustainability issues in the national park.

However, it has been observed that the incidence of endometrial cancer may be increasing. Objectives: To document the prevalence, clinical profile, and histological types of endometrial malignancies in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria, Northern Nigeria. Study Design: Descriptive study. Setting: Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Histo-Pathology Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria. Materials and Methods: Data of histologically proven cases of endometrial malignant tumors from January 1992–December 2011 were extracted from case notes, cancer registry and histology forms/reports and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 17.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: Seventy-seven cases were recorded during the period under review, and this constituted 5% of all genital tract malignancies. The number of cases seen in the first 10 years under review (1992–2001) were 24 (2.4 cases/year), while that of the second decade (2002–2011) were 55 (5.5 cases/year), reflecting more than two-fold increase. The mean age and parity of the patients were 52 ± 14.9 years and 7.4 ± 2.5, respectively. Over 67% of the cases were postmenopausal. Vaginal bleeding was the principal presenting symptom occurring in 100% of cases, and the uterus was enlarged in 82% of patients. Endometrial biopsy was the main method of diagnosis (60% of cases), and 89% of cases were diagnosed in clinical stages 1 and 11. Adenocarcinoma was seen in 78% of cases, while stromal sarcoma constituted 13% and mixed Mullerian tumor accounted for 9%. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was the main treatment offered. Conclusion: The incidence of endometrial carcinoma may be on the increase in our setting. High index of suspicion and endometrial biopsy will diagnose majority of cases.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has disproportionately overburden Africans with advanced stage at diagnos... more Colorectal cancer (CRC) has disproportionately overburden Africans with advanced stage at diagnosis and higher mortality rate due in part to issues that include grossly inadequate resources for management and poor understanding of the pathobiology of the disease. Accumulating evidences support the effectiveness of Aspirin in prevention and inhibition of CRC occurrence and cellular growth respectively. The utilisation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based regimens which include folinic acid, 5-FU and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) combination in CRC management have not completely halt the distant recurrences and poor prognosis of CRC. In this study, we highlighted evidences that prove Aspirin plus FOLFOX to be promising alternative for clinical trial in Black men with CRC. Our study aims in this research were: to identify the expression pattern of BIRC7 in human CRC cells, SW480 cell line and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (NMU)-induced CRC in rat; to determine the relationship between BIRC7 and BCL2, p53, PDL-1, MSH1, PMS2, DARC and Annexin V expression in CRC. to examine the efficacy of Aspirin plus neoadjuvant FOLFOX on the BIRC7 in CRC cells in-vivo in rat. Results show significant (P = 0.0001) expression of the BIRC7 in the CRC tissues compared to normal sections. When comparing this expression with Data from TCGA data bank, we observed a significant increase in BIRC7 expression in Caucasian than the Black and Indian and The expression pattern of the BIRC7 was significantly higher (P = 0.0001) in CRC not otherwise specified compared to mucinous CRC histology. The SW480 cell line show increased expression of the BIRC7 protein in-vitro. There was significant expression of the BIRC7 in the NMU-induced CRC cells compared the normal colonic lesion. There was increased expression of the BCL-2 and reduced expression of p53 in the human CRC cases and in the NMU-induced CRC cells model. There was increased expression of the Annexin V, absence of the MSH1, PMS2, PDL1 and DARC protiens in the CRC sections. Aspirin plus FOLFOX may serve as an important adjuvant treatment component for colorectal cancer metastasis and local recurrence in Blacks, Caucasian and Asians. There is need to explore the potential of Aspirin plus FOLFOX for clinical trial in colorectal cancer management in Blacks and other population using approach from our findings. Colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma is one of the distinct histological subtypes of the disease implicated in chemotherapeutic resistance associated with nodal and peritoneal metastases and worse disease-free survival as an index of poor prognosis. One of the important acquired capabilities used by the cancer cells to resist anticancer therapies is evasion of apoptosis possibly via inhibitor of apoptosis proteins for which Livin is one. This protein contains baculoviral IAP repeat domains in addition to a RING finger, a protein-protein motif important for binding and inhibition of active caspases that interfere with intrinsic and/or extrinsic pathway and the ensuing blockade of apoptosis. Thus, understanding the molecular events on how cancer cells of mucinous histology evade apoptotic death may provide a novel paradigm for a molecular targeted therapy in the management of colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma...

Racial/ethnic disparities in early-onset CRC have also grown more pronounced, because Black individuals have higher early-onset CRC incidence and poorer survival compared with White individuals. We describe the prevalence and burden of early-onset CRC among Africans in Nigeria and African Americans (AAs) in the United States. PATIENTS AND METHODS We identified Black individuals diagnosed with a first primary CRC ages 18 to 49 years between 1989 and 2017 at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, Nigeria (Nigerians), and in the United States (AAs) using the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute’s SEER program of cancer registries. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate clinical and demographic differences between Nigerians and AAs with early-onset CRC, adjusted for age, sex, tumor...
